Harvest is underway. As one travels about the countryside, there are a few fields that have been harvested, in other fields swathing has been done and in others swathing or straight combining is underway. If the fine weather continues, more combines and swathers will be seen working and harvest will be completed early.
Visiting with Lois Pike recently was Doreen Angus of Victoria, B.C., and her daughter Marg Logan of Prince Rupert, B.C. They had quite a trip sightseeing and visiting. Besides visiting in Saskatchewan, they began their trip driving to Portland, Ore. to visit friends and to enjoy the scenery.
While here, they were guests at Lois’s cabin at Loon Lake for a few days. A wonderful time was had with some members of Lois's family coming to visit each day. Following their visit with Lois and family, Doreen and Marg went on to Porcupine Plain to take part in the Logan family reunion.
The Pike family was well represented at the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony held at the Alex Dillabough Centre in North Battleford Aug. 15. Eighteen inductees were honoured. Among the teams inducted was Standard Hill. Kim Gerbig accepted the plaque on their behalf.
The Pike family had the biggest showing at the induction ceremony. Although nothing was said in the article about the involvement of those inductees, members of the Pike family certainly did their share in making baseball a memorable part of sports in Waseca, Maidstone, Standard Hill and other areas. They played, coached, umped, kept score and took care of the young people in the junior teams. Many of them played for Standard Hill and, as time went on, played for Standard Hill Old Timers. A few still play with the Standard Hill team when the old timers have a tournament each year somewhere in the province. Congratulations to the Pikes and the Standard Hill team.
Helena Pike spent the weekend of Aug. 21 in Saskatoon, the guest of her grandson, Mark Oddan, his wife, Tracy, and their sons, Carter and Lincoln. Besides enjoying the visit, she attended Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, which this year featured the plays Othello and Much Ado About Nothing. This is always a very interesting event.
On reading the article on the Cey Clydesdales in the Aug. 27 Northwest Farmer Rancher, I noted that the Ceys hired professional trainers Brian and Colleen Coleman of Didsbury, Alta. They trained Cey horses for both the Olds show and the Calgary Stampede and for the Sept. 29 to Oct. 3 world show to be held in London, Ont. Brian and Colleen are well known in the world of horses, Brian being a champion teamster who judges draft horses all over the world. Colleen is the daughter of Maureen (Pike) Bexson, formerly of this district.
