The students and staff hope everyone had a very nice Mother's Day weekend. At school, the elementary students were busy the week before Mother's Day, creating some beautiful gifts to present their mom on her special day.

The kindergarten and Grade 1 class were asked to use their creativity when making their Mother's Day presents. The students were shown how to make bracelets, flowers and flower pictures. The students were then asked to put their own spin on one of these projects or create an individual idea of their own to make a special present for mom.

The classroom was a mess as the young students worked busily to make that very special gift. They were always asking for a variety of materials and some even connected their gifts to a math outcome and asked if they could have a 3D vase for their flowers. At the end of the day, the students were very proud of their creations and anxiously carried them home to give to their mothers.

The Grade 2 and 3 class made their moms, "Breakfast in a Bag." This consisted of an apple, a granola bar and a tea bag. These were placed in a brown paper lunch bag that was decorated to look like their mom sleeping under her comforter. It was a delicious and nutritious breakfast treat.

The Grade 4 and 5 class made butterfly suncatchers out of construction paper and coloured tissue paper. The students cut out two outlines of butterflies, covered the open spaces with tissue paper and glued the two butterflies together. They decorated the butterflies with eyes, stickers and sparkles. They attached a painted, plastic suncatcher to the larger butterflies, so they actually had two suncatchers together. They turned out very well.

The students made these gifts with a lot of love and hope they helped brighten their mothers' day!

For the last six months, Maymont students and Mr. Nickell have waged an epic battle of floor hockey every available recess and noon hour. The tradition began last year when Mr. Nickell formed Nickell and Friends, which consisted of Grade 11s and 12s. They played against a team of rookies named the Rookies.

The rules: last goal wins, and the rookies don't get to win the cup. This year the rules remained the same.

Some controversy arose around team names and Nickell and Friends was renamed Carter Amson and Friends and then later Jordan and Friends. The league became more official with its introduction of the Jose Cup which features a picture of a former student from Mexico on the front.

The series' final began last week and Nickell and Friends/Carter Amson and Friends/Jordan and Friends took a commanding 7-2 series lead. It all came down to Friday's game. The Rookies won first recess by recruiting a mass number of students. After noon hour, the game was tied. Unfortunately for the rookies, they lost by a landslide at last recess and the Jose cup went to the veteran team. It will be that way every year, and we wish next year's teams a lot of luck and fair play!

The kindergarten to Grade 6 students were invited to Hafford Wednesday afternoon for a performance by Brenda Baker. She is a multifaceted artist originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She has recorded five albums and currently makes her living from performing at schools and festivals for children. The performance was excellent and the students are very grateful to Hafford Central School for their invitation.

The kindergarten open house will be Monday, May 26 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. If your child will be five years of age on or before Dec. 31, please come and register your child and explore the kindergarten classroom.

Just a reminder that the MCS art show/variety and drama night will be Thursday, May 22, at 7 p.m. in the school gym.

Congratulations to Mrs. Jackson for completing her master's degree in special education. She will receive her degree June 5 from the University of Saskatchewan.
