Celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Maymont Memorial Hall, featuring the Sloan family. Make sure to mark it on your calendar for Oct. 17, starting at 7:30 p.m. Make sure to be there early as we will be having a silent auction table with many great items. It will be a fun-filled evening with two hours of jam-packed entertainment. Tickets will be available at the door.

Maymont seniors will be selling tickets for a fundraiser for the Maymont Seniors鈥 Centre. There will be two draws made. Dean Rogers has donated an outdoor nativity scene, four foot by four foot, and a goodie basket. Contact one of the members for tickets or watch for them at one of the malls.

For anyone wondering when the fowl supper will be held in Maymont, the date is Oct. 25. More info to follow later.

When my dad found out he only had six months to live, I made him a promise that Mel and I would take care of my mom. Mom didn鈥檛 want to be alone so we sold our home and moved in with her. Changes 鈥 there were lots of changes, not only for us but also for my mom 鈥 happy days, sad days, stressful days.

As the population ages, more caregiving is being provided by people who aren鈥檛 health care professionals. What is a caregiver? A caregiver is anyone who provides help to another person in need, such as an ill spouse or partner, a disabled child or an aging relative. Sometimes it鈥檚 left to one person in the family even if there are others who could help. Please give your family or friend the support they need. Don鈥檛 expect them to do it on their own.

Caregiving can have many rewards. Being there when someone needs you is a privilege and it鈥檚 something you want to do. Sometimes it is stressful and emotional. It is natural to feel angry, frustrated, exhausted, alone and sad.

You can be vulnerable to changes in your own health. Some risk factors for caregivers鈥 stress include living with the person you are caring for, social isolation, depression, financial difficulties, lack of coping skills and difficulty solving problems. Caregivers鈥 stress also can be feeling overwhelmed or constantly worried, feeling tired most of the time, sleeping too much or not enough and much more.

To help manage caregiver stress, accept help and focus on what you are able to provide. It鈥檚 normal to feel guilty sometimes, but understand no one is 鈥減erfect.鈥 A support group can provide validation and encouragement, as well as problem solving. Set health goals and see your doctor if you are really stressed out.

Just know, as a caregiver, you aren鈥檛 alone.
