Once again, the junior and senior students of Hafford Central School amazed the audience with their acting skills April 3.
The performances were held in conjunction with the 14th Annual Art and Drama Extravaganza. The junior drama club performed Beauty is a Beast. The cast consisted of Tyra Smith as Princess Beauty, Hailey Lesko (Princess Honor), Levi Smith (Nick), Marina Rice (Fairy One), Megan Jones (Fairy Two), Lucas LaFreniere (Prince Andres), Morgan Attrux (Janie), Jordan Gall (Scribe), Quinn Anhorn (King), Evan Shutiak (Guard), Dawson Lehmann(Peter and Mayor), Rayleen Roth (Patty), Kirsty Kindrachuk (Cindy), Joseph Tanchak (Sam), Bailey Yasieniuk (Mandy) and Brittany Bezmutko (Jill).
These 18 cast members performed the comedy about a conceited princess who is taught some reality lessons by her meddling fairies. The play follows Princess Beauty on her journey of self-discovery as peasants teach her values and appreciation of others. The play was directed by Laura Weber and Angie Radke. Costumes were done by the directors and cast; hair and makeup was done by Laura Weber and Angie Radke; lighting was handled by Brittany Bezmutko and sound by Ty Dishko.
The second performance of the afternoon was the presentation of The Haunting of Chip Lake Lodge. The performance consisted of a cast of six characters Kelsey Wintonyk (Stephanie), Cole Janostin (Justin), Sarah Jones (Jennifer), Rebekah Lesko (Amy), Katrina Kindrachuk (Leroy) and Codie Yasieniuk as Patricia. The play was set at a run-down lake resort. Four high school seniors took a wrong turn on their way to the prom and find themselves contained at the 'haunted' lodge. A series of unexplained events occur drawing the main characters into a deranged plot to free the spirit from the curse of Chip Lake. The play was directed by Janet Baranieski and Brianne Baranieski; costumes were done by Christine Gonda, Janet Baranieski and cast; hair and makeup was done by Allanna Hawrysh and Sarah Marshal, lights by Dylan Roth, and sound by Michael Herman, Ty Dishko and Christine Gonda. Michael Herman and Ty Dishko provided the music and sound effects and the stage manager was Joshua Jackson.
The valuable fundraising chair was Christine Gonda who collected a large selection of silent auction items.
The senior drama group took their performance to Moose Jaw for the regional drama competition on March 31. Results of the competition were not available at press time but will be published at a future date.
The audience was asked to vote on their favourite actors for the People's Choice Award.
Recipient of the Best Junior Actor plaque was Levi Smith. Best Junior Actress was shared amongst Hailey Lesko, Tyra Smith and Marina Rice. Favourite Senior Male Performer was presented to Cole Janostin and Favourite Senior Female Performer was presented to Katrina Kindrachuk.
There was a wonderful display of students' art work adorning the walls and side tables in the gymnasium. There are a number of talented students in both the visual and performing arts. The school and staff should be commended on permitting their students to grow their talents.
