Grades 2 to 5 attend safety symposium

Technology can be a blessing, but it can also be annoying when it doesn't work properly. Somehow the news did not get to the paper last week, so this article will be twice as long.

Brayden Harris represented the school at the senior district golf playoffs in Spiritwood. It was a beautiful day to be out on the golf course. Brayden reported that he played pretty well but it was a tough course. The school community would like to congratulate Brayden on his efforts and for representing the school.

The Grades 2-5 classes ventured to North Battleford Sept. 19 to attend the safety symposium at the Agrivilla. There were 10 safety stations set up, and students spent 10 minutes at each station. They learned about power take-offs and their dangers, the new STARS helicopter, water safety, the dangers of not wearing a helmet when riding on an ATV and how quickly grain can smother a person. Each student received a free T-shirt and a lot of valuable information. They spent the afternoon at the fieldhouse exercising and using all the equipment.

Welcome Week activities ended with the toonie toss. For $2, students received a pie to toss at a staff member. Volunteer staff members were Mr. Lockwood, Mrs. Walker, Miss Jordan, Mrs. Fouhy and Chase Fouhy. They were covered in garbage bags as they anticipated the pies.

Seth McIntosh in Grade 3 stated that he hit Mr. Lockwood on the top of his head because he threw the pie like a Frisbee. He said this with a grin.

The money raised will help fund SLC activities.

Soccer and volleyball teams are busy. The senior boys' soccer team attended a tournament in Rosthern Sept. 19 and 20. They improved every game but unfortunately did not win any games. Sean Brehon seriously hurt his ankle and staff wish him a speedy recovery. They played several games during the week and then attended a tournament in North Battleford organized by Cando. They didn't win but maintained a positive outlook.

The senior girls' soccer team also played some games during the week and attended the Cando tournament in North Battleford. They do not have a lot of team members but are playing well.

The senior girls' volleyball team attended a tournament in Borden. It was a four-team round robin. The girls only won one set but they improved throughout the day. They will be playing in a tournament in Hafford Saturday.

The junior girls' volleyball team attended their first tournament at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School Sept. 20. This was a five-team round-robin. The Maymont girls improved all day. They finished second in the round robin. They lost the semifinal to John Paul II, but went on to win the bronze game against the Comprehensive. They hosted a series of games against Hafford and will host Borden this week. They will play in a tournament in Spiritwood Saturday.

The school's annual Terry Fox Walk was held Sept. 26. The usual route was covered in water so a new route was created. All students and staff started in the gym. Mrs. Brehon spoke to the group about Terry Fox, his achievements and why we still take part in the annual walk.

Several elementary students told the group who they were walking for during this year's walk. Rylan Voegeli was walking for her great-uncle Leonard, who recently passed away from cancer. Brooke Ferris was walking for her Auntie Cheryl, who was the school's secretary for many years. Many other students were walking for relatives, friends or for Terry Fox himself.

Students and staff then left the gym and walked the perimeter of the yard for 40 minutes. It was a beautiful day, and close to $400 was raised for the Terry Fox Foundation. Keeley Bzdel, our Me to We student co-ordinator, sold lollipops to raise an extra $20 for the foundation.

The school community council held their first organizational meeting Sept. 24. The next one will be held Oct. 6.

Staff attended a professional development day Sept. 29. Some staff went to student tutoring sessions, some to first steps math, and many went to digital citizenship. It was a very productive day.

Ashton Harris, Grade 7, made the AA peewee hockey team in North Battleford. Congratulations, Ashton, and have a great season.

One of the MCS educational assistants, Anita Prescesky, will be participating in the CIBC Run for the Cure this weekend in Saskatoon. This is a great cause, and everyone at the school wishes her a good walk.

Congratulations to Twyla Stott on the recent marriage of her daughter, Kristen, to Derek Molnar.
