A golf tournament was held at the Borden Golf Course June 23 to raise money for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. Twenty golfers participated in the scramble format with tee-off at noon. Murray Derbowka and Susan Munroe were in charge of the day. They arranged prizes for everyone as well as a number of silent auction items. Dianne Sylvester and Susan looked after the booth for the day. Winning the 50/50 of $57 was Scott Sutherland and Brock Joncas won a cooler of goodies as second prize. Winning the top prize was the team of Scott and Glenn Sutherland, Graham Derbowka and Ian Wainright. Longest drive was won by Scott for the men, Susan for the women and Vern Sylvester for the seniors. Closest to the pin was Alan Tanchak for the men and Kayla Block for the women.
An 80th birthday party was held June 23 in the Borden seniors’ club room for John Petrun. Family and friends gathered for a cold plate supper. After supper a few either roasted or toasted John. Daughter Kim Worona gave a brief history of John’s life, then Ed Neufeld sang a song he had written, Time to Work on Uncle John’s Farm. Richard Wiebe from Saskatoon entertained for the rest of the evening, playing guitar and singing many older country and western songs, closing with My Best to You.
Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club held their achievement day June 17 at the farm of Jim Attrux northeast of Speers. Events started at 10 a.m. with judging of animals. The classes started at 12:30 p.m.
General leaders of the club are Richard and Sandra Yasieniuk, with Jim Attrux as assistant and intermediate leader with Greg Remus. Senior leaders are Richard and Glenn Sutherland and junior/Cloverbud leaders are Bev Reid and Caley Letkeman.
Members are: Cloverbud - Caybri and Zanyne Letkeman and Everitt Cairns; junior - Taylor Reid, Keardyn Cairns and Shalaya Umperville Bear; intermediate - Boden Letkeman, Hunter and Cole Reid, McKinna Cairns, Cheyanne Roth, Hannah Remus, Jamie Attrux, Courtney Yasieniuk and Cody Shumanski; seniors - Abigail Roth, Jessica Attrux, Layne Cairns, Kolby Heidt, Rachel Sutherland, Anna and Ariana Verbonac, Justin, Kolten and Tyler Yasieniuk.
Judge for the day was Ron Noble from Lloyminister. Leanne Doud and Brydie Kuntz from Cut Knife judged the record books. In Cloverbuds, Zayne was first in record books, judging and questionnaires, Caybri was second and Everitt third. In juniors, Shalaya was first in record books and the 4-H test, Taylor was second in record books and tied for first in the test. Keardyn was second in judging and third in the test.
In Intermediates, Courtney was first in judging and the test, Cole was second in record books and test and third in judging, Hunter was second in judging and third in record books and test and Boden was first in record books.
In seniors, Abigail was first in record books. Ariana was tied for first in record books and was second in judging. Rachel was second in record books and test and third in judging. Justin was third in record book and Layne was first in judging.
The Cloverbuds showed a calf and they each got a red ribbon and a bag of 4-H goodies. Caybri and Zayne each showed a lamb and they received red ribbons.
In the junior grooming classes, Taylor was first, with second going to Keardyn and third to Shalaya. In intermediate, first was Jamie, second McKinna, third Hunter. Rachel was first in seniors Kolten, was second and Justin third.
Courtney was injured in an accident two weeks ago and her animal was shown by one of her brothers. In the three heifer classes the top two in each class belonged to Rachel, Hunter, Cole, Justin, Courtney, Tyler and champion heifer went to Hunter with Cole reserve.
In the two-year-old cow/calf category, Jamie was first, Cody second and Courtney third.
Hunter was first in the three-year-old cow/calf and Tyler second. The overall champion female was shown by Hunter and reserve by Cole.
In the four steer classes, the top two in each class belonged to Rachel, Courtney, Hunter, Justin, Cole, Kolten, Tyler and Cody. The grand champion steer banner was earned by Justin and Courtney’s steer was reserve champion.
In junior showmanship, Taylor was first, second went to Keardyn and third to Shalaya. In intermediate, first was Cole, second Jamie and third Hunter. Rachel was first in seniors. Kolten was second and Layne third. Top showman was Cole. Overall winners in other categories were: Taylor - questionnaires; Boden - record books, Courtney and Layne - judging; Rachel - grand aggregate.
All members received certificates, prizes and a cash reward and the judges were given appreciation gift certificates. A draw made for a Father’s Day gift of a fishing rod and tackle was won by Bob Nykiforuk.  The members will be showing their animals at the Junior 4-H Show in Saskatoon July 7 to 9.
The Riverbend Fellowship Church held their annual pig roast in Memorial Park June 24. Entertaining were the Budd Family and Friends from rural Saskatoon, with Emily playing fiddle, George playing guitar, Eryn McDonald playing mandolin and harmonica and Ethan Peters playing bass fiddle while all four sang gospel, folk and bluegrass songs. While they had a supper break, Ron Mills, Peter Thiessen and Ruben Rempel sang a few songs accompanied by Amanda Kennedy on keyboard. Dorothy Whitbread played keyboard and sang I Will Trust In You. Funds, after expenses, will go to the Borden fire hall renovations.
