Girls win championships with area hockey teams

Easter has hopped in and out. Hope everyone had safe travels and lots of fun family memories to cherish. Now if this elusive spring would ever arrive . So far the melting has taken place slowly.

Easter has hopped in and out. Hope everyone had safe travels and lots of fun family memories to cherish. Now if this elusive spring would ever arrive . So far the melting has taken place slowly. We can only wait to see how this spring melt is going to play out. As well, we are all hoping we are done with spring storms and snowfall.

Brittany Hauta and Samantha David played their hockey season with the Neilburg Midget A Girl Monarchs. They had a long series of wins that took them to the league final. Facing off against Rosthern, the girls skated to a last minute goal in double overtime to win game one. Game two took place March 27 and again the game was sent into overtime, but the Monarchs, including the two Unity girls, overcame the heat and won the series.

The West Central Midget AA Girls' team, which included Unity's Heather Wood, captured their provincial title. They also earned league title, earning two decided victories against Saskatoon.

The Unity Miners Hockey Club is hosting this year's SWHL awards Saturday, April 13 at the Unity Community Centre starting with supper at 6 p.m. and awards and entertainment to follow. Entertainment includes comedians Marty Hanenbert and Clark Robertson, who is famous for his Don Cherry impersonations. Contact Carleen at 306-228-9315 for more details.

The Unity Composite High School drama club public performances are being held April 11 and 12. The regional drama, hosted at Unity, is April 19 and 20.

The students are presenting two plays. 16 in 10 Minutes or Less depicts the lives of high school students at age 16. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde will be the second performance. With the talents of the club and their director, the audience will get the full live theatre experience with lights, sound, set, costume, efficient stage crew and fine acting.

UCHS is now accepting nominations for the Hall of Honour of graduates who have been out of school for a minimum of 10 years and have achieved success in academics, arts, athletics, citizenship, humanities. The application is available on the school's website.

At Unity Public School, organizers were able to reschedule a trip to Table Mountain scuttled by the blizzard. The students and staff enjoyed a beautiful, sunny, warm day at Table Mountain March 27. Students are enjoying a week-long Easter break before heading back to classes April 8. The UPS community council annual general meeting is Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the UPS gym.

All music festival performers are in the final stages of preparation for Unity's 87th annual music festival to be held the week of April 15 - 19, with showcase performances to be held April 21 at UCHS. Entry numbers are up this year and it will be an amazing week of piano, vocal and school performances. There was not enough interest to proceed with a soccer season, but a parent group has stepped up to resume the season and will hold registration April 15 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the rink lobby. Contact Heather Poitras at 306-228-2131.

The museum is still hosting Sunday pancake brunches. A bargain price of only $6, so come out before church or afterward and the cooks will have a hot meal ready for you.

Unity Credit Union held their annual general meeting March 26. Three new board members were voted in, one incumbent, Jay Baesse, and two newcomers, Rhonda Brandle and Sandra Wagner, join the board.

The Unity School of Dance held their showcase of duets, trios and solos March 24 with two performances, each featuring a different lineup. Now they head into a busy competition season until the entire dance club holds their showcase of talent early in May.

The coffee row table joined the excitement as the group includes grandparents, uncles and friends of the Unity Midgets who captured both league and provincial titles this past week. World men's curling is second in line as "rowers" review their picks for playoffs and the new men's Team Canada competing. Of course, the weather topic never gets too far off the table either as everyone is predicting what spring thaw will look like. In spite of the weather, this is a fun group full of laughter and optimism. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week
