Geese won't be finding open water

Last week we thought spring was on the way, but temperatures have once again fallen well below zero and winds have been cold. After the thaw, with low temperatures, there is lots of ice making walking difficult.

Some of the birds must think spring is here. We have seen geese who will find it difficult to find any open water.

It was a shock for all of us to hear of the sudden death of Eva Sutherland during the past week. Eva, as she was known to all of us, passed away at Pine Island Lodge where she had resided for the past few years. She had recently celebrated her 93rd birthday.

Eva was born, Eva Noble, to Harry and Isabella Noble who lived north of Waseca, farming and doing other work. She and other family members attended Coronach and Tweedsmuir rural schools. Eva married Carl Sutherland who farmed in the Walter district. They had nine children. The children attended Walter School until the family moved to Waseca. Eva made her home in Waseca until she moved to Pine Island Lodge.

Eva's life was one of many challenges that she met energetically. In her childhood years she and her siblings walked a long distance to school as well as helping with farm work. As well as farm work after her marriage she spent some years on the mail run north of Waseca, a very challenging job especially in winter months when horses and sleigh were used. The mail had to be delivered whatever the weather. Eva also did the janitor work at Waseca School for several years. She had a busy life. One could always be sure of a good conversation with Eva. One could be sure to hear some sharp and humorous interjections in the conversation. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Our sympathy to her family of sons and daughters and all their children and to the many people who enjoyed her company throughout the years.

The "quilters" who meet at Waseca Community Centre every first and third Friday of the month, held a business meeting as part of their day March 21. Plans for the year to come were discussed including finances, planning for some days when we would have classes for furthering our "quilting knowledge" and plans for charity quilts.

Anyone interested in quilting is welcome to come. I've learned a lot from other members who are all willing to share their knowledge and help.

The "fish fry" evening held at Waseca Hall on Friday, March 21, proved to be an interesting time. The proceeds will go towards Waseca playground equipment. Thank you to all!
