The Communities in Bloom committee held their Residential Garden Tour July 21, with 35 people registering for the tour. Refreshments and gardening tips were offered by each of the hosts. Seven homes were open for the tour: Steve Marshall and Bonnie Durette, Jerome Pinsonneault, Blair and Kim Wagner, Stan Wright at The Sugar Shack, Randy and Donna Bosch, Rick and Susan Oatway and Duane and Lois Clark. Thank you to these folks for sharing your yards with others. The yards were amazing and the pride these folks take in their yards was obvious as you entered each property. A video was taken of the entire tour and will be available on the Town of Unity facebook page.
The CIB committee has been extremely excited because show day arrived this week for the National Communities in Bloom competition. Because Unity won the provincial competition for this project in 2010, they were eligible to enter for the national field. July 28, the judges arrived in town. A major event planned to showcase our community and all it has to offer was the community picnic July 28 at the regional park. Activities included Summer Fun Centre games for the kids, a barbeque, tennis clinic, diving clinic, dog agility demonstrations, softball games, the bouncy house and more.
Baseball season is over. It was a great success. Softball season is generally over; however, there will still be those girls, and guys, who have qualified for the Zone 7 softball teams, working out at the diamonds prior to the Zone tournament being held in Unity the September long weekend. And for a special treat, some of the bantam boys baseball players have migrated over to the game of softball to try out for the Zone 7 bantam softball team. So fear not, softball fans. You will still be able to catch a little ball action before school begins.
Summer Fun Centre is still a happening place to be for kids ages 5-11. Last week the centre had a theme week which was a lot of fun. Each week the kids at SFC create a craft each morning and take part in games and activities each afternoon. This week they had an ice cream party Thursday afternoon, and on Friday they are sharing the excitement of the Communities in Bloom visitors as they show off the bean cups they planted. And don't forget - each week on Friday afternoons they go swimming. Drop by the Unity Community Centre and Chantal, Jessica and Becky can show you what Summer Fun is all about. The swimming pool is a busy place. The pool successfully hosted a three-night diving clinic with 1992 Olympic dive competitor, Mary DePeiro, teaching her skills to participants. Moonlight swims, for ages 12 and up, are every Monday and Wednesday from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Aquasizes are running and there is public swimming each afternoon and evening. Unity Golf Club is very proud of their junior men's golfer, Justin Wood, who earned the right to compete at Junior Men's Nationals in Surrey, B.C. in early August. The Golf Club has donated the proceeds from the meals sold at ladies' night, men's night and seniors' day golf toward some of his expenses to attend the event. The club is busy this summer with family reunions and have hosted several business golf tournaments already. Upcoming for the club are several more business sponsored tournaments. Make sure to call the golf club if you want information on any upcoming tournaments, or just to book a tee time.
Coffee row folks are enjoying all the activity our community has offered so far this year. They smile as they recount visits with old friends who have returned for a wedding or reunion. They speak with pride on how well events in our community are put on. And they look forward to another month of much the same.
