LAKE LENORE — Lake Lenore is winding up for their 13th annual Heatwave summer event, featuring the town’s first ever Bunnock tournament.

The Heatwave will have a beer garden, pork loin barbecue dinner, wagon rides, bouncy castles, a slow-pitch tournament and various other kids’ activities, said Colleen Lessmeister, Heatwave committee volunteer.

“It's a good family event,” she said. “It’ll be a fun day.”

A portion of the funds raised at the family event will be going to equipment for Lake Lenore’s first responder team of around six volunteers, Lessmeister said. The rest will go to facilities throughout the community.

Since its first year in 2006, Lessmeister said the Heatwave has raised more than $100,000 for the betterment of Lake Lenore facilities including its school, library, hockey rink and curling rink.

“All of those different kinds of facilities get help from us, whether it be a furnace needed or different things like that,” she said.

This year's visitors, who Lessmeister said average about 200 people annually, can also make a team of four for this year’s Bunnock tournament. Bunnock, “the game of bones,” is similar to lawn bowling wherein players throw replica horse ankle bones at the opposing team’s row of 20. The game is “a huge deal” in Macklin, Lessmeister said, where more than 300 teams compete in an annual championship.

The Bonnuck tournament at this year’s Heatwave will hopefully become an annual feature.

“That's going to be the signature,” said Lessmeister. “Something that's going to take off and get more people coming for the day.”

The Heatwave will be taking place at the Lake Lenore sportsgrounds throughout Saturday, June 22. Lessmeister said only the slow-pitch tournament may be affected given bad weather.
