Saskatoon Health Region held a Forever ... in motion information and exercise session April 16 in the Borden Seniors' Room with 15 out to hear Kereen Lazurko, recreational therapist, explain what the program was about and the benefits. She was also looking for volunteers to take training and lead an in motion exercise group in Borden for those 50-plus.

Some facts are: 72 per cent of falls occur in and round seniors' homes; one out of three older adults over the age of 65 will fall this year; 95 per cent of hip fractures are caused by falls of older adults; 40-50 per cent of older adults in hospital require longer stays; six per cent of hospitalizations due to older adults falls result in death.

Exercise helps to prevent falls by improving strength, balance and co-ordination. She listed benefits of doing physical activity. Risks of not being in motion include many diseases, premature death and it has the same effect as smoking a pack a day. She also showed two types of poles - urban poling and nordic walking which can be used for balance or exercising, similar to skis, and said where they can be bought in Saskatoon.

The door prize of a T-shirt went to Gary Palmer and coffee and cookies were served to those in attendance.

The many beautiful and useful gifts were opened and admired by Jessica, her mother Kathy and Gerson's mother Mrs. Urbina. Every five minutes or so a timer went off and whose ever gift was being unwrapped had to give Jessica some advice on parenting. Jessica thanked everyone for coming, for all the gifts and said how blessed she is to live in such a caring community. A light lunch was served with punch.
