From +27 C to -27 C and catching up on the local news

My wife and I boarded the plane Feb. 11 at 27 C, a pleasant ocean breeze and palm trees waving their goodbyes. Eight hours later we landed to -27 C with a fresh westerly wind, snowflakes falling and snow banks as a welcome back.

Consequently I have been negligent in reporting the goings on of our village for some time. Sixteen days in the warm south is about all I could think of but now the reality of home has returned. Some of what I have to say is old but I will catch up.

A big thanks to Brian Jones, Danny Wright and Gerry Miller for moving snow with their bobcats, tractors and snowblowers all around town. It is encouraging to see the fire hydrants all cleaned out and the banks in front of the hall moved as required.

The Rabbit Lake branch of Lakeland Library held its annual Kaiser tournament, Jan. 19. Even though it was a cold night, nine tables of players from the community and the surrounding communities came for an evening of cards and recreation.

Get well wishes go out to Marvin Price, Marg Penner, Monica Liddell and Danny Wright. Hopefully the coming of spring and the warmer weather will help lighten the load.

The community gathered Feb 12 for the funeral of the late Matthew Hildebrand. Even though it was a very stormy day, many people were able to come and support the family. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Marlene Hildebrand and her family.

Tuesday nights continue to be Rink Night with skating, burgers and fries and, of course, bunnock. There has been good participation over the season.

The WhistleStop hosted a Valentine's supper featuring steak and lobster, Feb. 15. The event was sold out with guests coming from Spiritwood, Mayfair, Whitkow, North Battleford, Lloydminster and Rabbit Lake. The word is the whole thing will happen again next Valentine's!

Shelly and I enjoyed Old Ladies in Tennis Shoes put on by the Old Mill Players in Mayfair, Feb. 21. This is an annual drama feature and was very well done. This production was not entirely comedy so it left you with something to think about on the way home. New to the crew is Elaine Tomkins of Rabbit Lake who was the director this year. Once again the Mayfair recreation board put on an excellent supper. Way to go, Mayfair!

Joan Dzialo brought in live entertainment to the Rabbit Lake Hotel, Feb. 22. Three ladies who call themselves, Raven she hollers - Joys Dancer, Nissa Shiell and Chandra Peterson -treated the listeners to several genres of music.

The community says welcome to two new faces at Rose Gill Lodge. Therese Zilan and Albina Palm have come to make Rabbit Lake home and we are pleased to have them. We also bid farewell to Betty Johnson who has moved from the lodge.

Welcome home to Earl and Shirley Jones who have spent the last three months on an around the world holiday. Others who have travelled are Dave and Marlene Martens, Dominican Republic; Alan and Deb Martens, Hawaii; Alan and Shelly Laughlin, Mexico; Claus and Cyndy Spielman, Mexico; and Joan and Hanna Dzialo, Hawaii.

Upcoming events in the community would be the annual snowmobile rally March 1. There is lots of snow and a good time awaits. Registration and other events are at the Rabbit Lake Community Hall.

The Rabbit Lake Community Hall will be holding its annual meeting March 20 at 7 p.m.

The WhistleStop will be holding a St. Patrick's supper at the Rabbit Lake Senior Sunrise Circle March 17, and, on March 29, the St Paul's Lutheran Community Church will be holding its annual deep fried turkey supper at the community hall.

The Village of Rabbit Lake will be hosting a musical jam session at the hall March 22, from 2-5 p.m. Anyone who wishes to play their instruments or to dance or to come and listen is more than welcome.

The Rose Gill Lodge board will be sponsoring a country dance with the Rhythmairs playing at the community hall, March 15. Tickets are available from the lodge, the hotel, the store or any board member.

Sandwith Community Hall will be holding a Kaiser tournament March 7 and Resolute School will be holding one on March 8.

It's never too early to mark the annual Carlton Trail Jamboree on the calendar. This year it will be held July 4, 5 and 6.
