Friendship Club welcomes new members

The Borden Friendship Club held their final potluck supper and birthday celebration for 2012 Nov. 28, with 28 out for supper. Happy Birthday was sung to those celebrating birthdays in October, November and December - Peter Thiessen, Irene Krivoshein, Phil Hogg, Marlene Derbawka, Jean Hryniuk and Don Brand. Bringing the decorated birthday cake was Sandra Long and Anne Kohut.

Four new members joined the club. Welcome to Dale Scruby and Brenda Roberts and Stephen and Marlene Derbawka. Entertainment for the evening was Rose Mandziak who sang; then Marlene Derbawka played guitar and sang. Rose and Marlene sang You Are My Sunshine together to end a delightful evening.

At a short meeting held, after trying out two different chairs, the members voted to buy 40 new stacking chairs to replace the ones that are becoming quite worn and threadbare.

The club's Christmas supper is Dec. 5 with Russ Fountain and Friends providing the musical entertainment.

Action Bowl will be finished this week with roll-offs on the agenda, then will start up again the week of Jan. 7. Not all results were posted up for the ninth week, but some results from the 55-plus league were averages and high triples: Allan Carnahan,131, 509; Edna Carnahan, 130, 445; Jean Sawchyn, 142, 506; Lorraine Olinyk, 148, 518; Florence Neufeld, 160, ?; Clayton Clark, 130, 421; and Annette Nesbitt, who has impaired sight, shot a 126 average and 429 triple.

In the mixed league, high averages and high singles results are from the first four weeks: Ivan Youchezin, 215, 267; Shaun Barth, 196, 299; Ian Tracksell, 169, 215; Karen Buckingham, 179 average; Dave Buckingham, 154, 214; Brenda, 134, 232.

The Borden Care Home Auxiliary held a tea Nov. 30 in the care home with families of the residents invited to the event. Musical entertainment was provided by Rose Mandziak singing Joy to the World and O Holy Night, then Jackie Meister played the piano for carol singing of Silent Night, Away in a Manger and Jingle Bells. Door prizes were won by Oliver Dear of Langham, Florence Neufeld of Borden and residents Shirley Jacobsen and Juane Farthing.

Borden branch of Affinity Credit Union has been raising funds for the United Way with a 50/50 draw and the lucky winner of $213 drawn Nov. 30 was Leslie Epp of Waldheim.

The Borden Farmers' Market Christmas sale held Dec. 1 was well-attended with 30 vendors selling so you had a wide range of tables to pick from. The Grad 2013 class did very well selling lunch all day. The farmers' market presented $250 to the Borden fire department, as well as an appreciation gift to Peter Thiessen and a donation to the Grad 2013 class.

Winning $10 each on the farmers' market draw were Jean Hryniuk, Darlene Pearce, Stan Foster, Ilene Youchezin and Terry Tkaczyk. Grad 2013 raffled off five gift baskets and winners were Audrey Baker, Ian Tracksell, Joan Irving, Jeannette Block and Helen Beaudry. Winning door prizes from the Borden Parks and Rec Board were Jesse Pidwerbesky, Darlene Sperling and Kirsten Szwydky. The door prize from Regal was won by Mandy Tracksell and a bag full of items from the Funks' table went to Jade Matte.

The Radisson Antique and General Store, owned and operated by Wally Neufeld, held its grand opening Dec. 2, with many from Radisson, Borden and area dropping in for hot dogs, donuts, coffee or juice. Winning the door prize was Peter Thiessen of Borden and winner of the playground 50/50 for $93 was Raymond Stott. Wally had several articles that went by silent auction.

Audrey and Crawford Baker are great-grandparents to Audrey Elizabeth, born Nov. 30 to Guy and Angie Stokes of Trail, B.C. and weighing seven pounds, six ounces. Grandparents are Jerry and Bernice Baker from Borden.

Condolences are extended to Ruth, Randy and Shirley Hosegood and extended family of Radisson on the passing of Allan Hosegood Nov. 30 at the age of 88 years. The service is Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. in the Radisson Lutheran Church.

The Borden Lions' Festival of Music was held on a stormy Dec. 2 night in the Borden Community Centre with not too many attending due to the weather. John Buswell was emcee and a video presentation on the journey to Bethlehem and the birth of Christ was shown while John narrated and Marlene Derbawka sang about the birth.

The Borden Grade 3 and 4 class sang Holiday Time, followed by the Rempel Family - Ruben, Martha, JaeLynn with Janeen on piano and Curt Penner playing a six-string banjo - signing Star of Bethlehem and Silent Night. Gayle Wensley had two piano solos - What Child is This? and O Holy Night. Peter Thiessen sang Dear Little Stranger and Star of Bethlehem and Martin recited the story So Cold, So Far from Home, about women captured in 1944 and how they spent Christmas in cold army barracks in Germany.

Roy Saunders, playing guitar, sang Little Drummer Boy, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, I'll Be Home for Christmas and performed one instrumental piece. Rose Mandziak sang Deck the Halls and Let it Snow! Let it Snow!, then Aryn Polichuk played piano for Song of the Waterfall and Jazz Exercise, and he played the saxophone for Angels We Have Heard on High and Joy to the World. Redberry Grass - Sam, Peter and Stephanie Derbawka - played and sang Winter Wonderland, Silent Night with mother Marlene joining in for Christmas Time is Coming. Archie's Angels - Lions members, with Bob Wardhaugh on keyboard - sang Make Me a Channel of your Peace, Just a Candle in the Window and Christmas Halleluiah.

The overhead screen was lowered and the Lions were led in, singing 10 favourite Christmas carols, ending with We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
