Friendship Club hosts cash bingo

At Borden Friendship Club’s monthly bingo cash Jan. 15, prize winners were Gerry Wainwright, Sylvia Larsen, Ruben Rempel (2x), Sandra Long (2x), Ilene Youchezin and Joyce Olzewski (2x). Stella Hawryluk won the last blackout game for $20. The next bingo will be Feb.19 at 7 p.m. A Kaiser tournament was held Jan. 21 and winning were Bev Hrynuik and Art Flath with Doreen Flath winning for low hand. The next Kaiser at the seniors’ centre will be Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

Congratulations to Jason and Amanda Rempel of Borden on the birth of Aubrey Renea on Jan. 11, weighing 6 lbs 6 oz, a baby sister for Kaci. Proud grandparents are Ruben and Martha Rempel of Borden.

St. John’s Anglican and United Churches held a luncheon Jan. 24 in the Borden Friendship Centre, raising money for the Borden School breakfast program. Thanks to all those who volunteered and supported the endeavour, $405 was presented to the school.

The Borden Lions Club Dinner Theatre on Feb. 15 has been cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. Thanks to those who have supported this endeavour in the past. Next up for the Borden Lions is the visit of the district governor March 14, with a meal and entertainment for members and invited guests.

Savannah Sutherland competed in the Knights of Columbus Games Jan. 24 and 25, coming away with more medals. Jan. 24 she was first in U18 60 metre hurdles and first in the 200 m race, setting new provincial records in both. She was 1/100 of a second out in tying the national record. She also qualified in the invitational women’s 50 m sprint with a time of 6.60. In the race she placed sixth with a time of 6.46, racing against runners from around the world. On Saturday she was in the invitational 60 m hurdles and placed eighth. In the 60 m invitational race she was third.

At the banquet Jan. 25 she received the athlete of the meet award in her age class.

Savannah, 16, is the daughter of Scott and Sonia Sutherland of Borden and attends Bishop Mahoney High School in Saskatoon, where she trains with coach Lee Wolfater. Savannah, who has been running since the age of 12, has broken 25 provincial records including some relays and has won 14 national medals, six of those gold.

Last year in Montreal, at the age of 15, she ran against 19-year-olds and won a silver in 100 m hurdles and a bronze in the 200 m. She is ranked third in Canada in U18 60 m and 100 m hurdles.

Upcoming is a meet in Las Vegas in two weeks, a meet in New York in March and a meet and training in California in April. In the summer she goes to Montreal and Nova Scotia again. She does all this while attending high school and also plays club volleyball in the city.
