Friendship Club hosts area seniors June 11

Borden Friendship Club meeting was held May 8, with president Lottie Petriew presiding. The club is inviting other clubs for supper June 11 at 5 p.m. and a program to follow. Borden members will pay $7 for the catered meal and the club will pay for the meals of guests and entertainers.

Forever in Motion workshop fee and mileage to Saskatoon will be paid by the club to Audrey Baker, who in turn can teach others the exercises she learns.

A big thank you was extended to Elizabeth Derksen who was one of the food co-ordinators for the flooding.

SSFA Rivers West District is holding 55-plus Game Days at Hafford May 29, St. Walburg June 7 and Rosetown July 13 - playing scrabble, cribbage, Kaiser, Bocci ball, five pin bowling at some locations, etc. Anyone 55-plus can attend by paying your $5 membership to SSFA and the registration fee for the day of $5.

Potluck supper and birthdays celebration, with entertainment, is May 29 at 5:45 p.m.

Radisson Royal Purple held their May meeting May 6 at the home of Roberta Harris, with eight members present. R. Harris installed the officers for the ensuing year - Past HRL, secretary and historian Lorraine Olinyk, associate RL Kay Shipowich, loyal lady Linda Yuskiw, lecturing lady Ellen Cousins, conductress Leona Bennett, chaplain Audrey Baker and treasurer Tina Hessell. Then Lorraine installed Roberta Harris as honoured royal lady.

The lodge is applying for funds from the Elks and Royal Purple Fund to aid Dexter Green, son of Derek and Amy Green, who was born Sept. 15, 2012, with CDH (Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia) and also has constant acid reflux, spending most of his young life in hospital.

The lodge is hosting those 50-plus at a tea and program for Royal Purple Day June 5 at 2 p.m. in Radisson Hall. The last meeting before summer break will be a barbecue at Roberta Harris's June 3. Lodge members are selling charity appeal tickets until June 1, when they go in for the draw June 8.

The Borden Lions held a successful Mother's Day brunch May 12 in the Borden Community Centre with proceeds going to diabetes. The men did all the work, serving pancakes, French toast, sausages, scrambled eggs, fruit cocktail and beverages, with saskatoons and strawberries for toppings.

The Borden Care Home Auxiliary held a Mother's Day Tea May 9 at the care home, with visitors dropping in from Borden, Radisson, Langham, Regina, Asquith and elsewhere to enjoy raisin bread, fruit, veggies and sweets with their beverages. The door prize of a wren bird house went to Phyliss Domashovitz of Radisson. The profit from the tea will go to buying flowers for the flower beds around the home.

At 11:30 a.m. an ecumenical church service was held in the Borden Seniors' Room with the three local churches participating. There was an open mike for people to share their thoughts about the two weeks of flooding and how the community, along with surrounding communities, banded together to help Borden in their time of need.

Rev. Debbie Ramage of the Anglican Church read Psalm 104 and her reflection on how the passage related to her and the flooding, Tony Martens of Riverbend Fellowship read 1 Corinthians 12: 12-26 and his reflections on how the reading affected him and the community and Gayle Wensley spoke on the reading from Mark 12: 28-34. For the hymns, Gayle sang a solo and led in singing How Great Thou Art and They'll Know We are Christians, with music supplied by Pamela Pidwerbesky on piano and Jamie Brandrick playing guitar. The loose offering of $542 went to the Borden Flood Relief Fund. Thanks to everyone for attending and donating.

Audrey Baker of Borden is participating in her 25th year of walking for cystic fibrosis May 26 in Saskatoon. Her grandson Brian Kraft was born with cystic fibrosis 26 years ago and Audrey has walked every year since he was a baby. This year she will be given a special T-shirt in honour of her 25 years of participation. If anyone wishes to donate, call Audrey at 306-997- 4828 or donate directly.

The Borden 4-H Light Horse Club held an equine and canine vet day at the farm of Alana Gunsch east of Borden, May 11. Dr Jordan Naylor and assistant Stephanie Derbawka of Corman Park Veterinary Services were on hand to administer four-way vaccine, Rabvac, Calvenza and to deworm and check the teeth of the 4-H members' horses and any other horses brought by someone who wished to have them done.

Also helping out was David Derbawka, with his sister Stephanie who is going in to her second year of vet medicine and working for the summer at the clinic. The club members and parents were on hand at 10 a.m. to start, had lunch and beverages on site and finished up at 5 p.m. Four way vaccines were available for dogs, but not many came for that. The 4-H club received a percentage for each horse or dog treated.

Upcoming at Borden School are the Grade 9 -12 field trip Grip It May 14; Grade 3 -8 Can Am Gymnastics trip May 15 and Grade 7 and 8 are entering the SIAST cardboard boat race May 17. The division field meet is at Griffith Stadium May 22. Family Fun Night is May 23 from 3 - 6:30 p.m. with a barbecue at 5 p.m. Runners go to Marafun Marathon in Saskatoon May 26. The school community council meeting is May 27, the Learning Fair May 29 at 6:15 p.m. and the district track meet at Griffiths May 31. In June the Hi-Lo meet for Grades K - 6 will be in Perdue June 12, Borden grad is June 14, awards night is June 17 and the kindergarten grad June 18. After being delayed for two weeks due to the flooding in Borden, the farmers' market will go ahead Friday, May 17, at the Borden Fire Hall. There may be restricted parking as many of the sandbags and the sandbagger are still all around the fire hall, although they may be moved this week. Just watch out for them if stopping by.
