The Borden Museum held an evening of Whist Feb. 27, with 16 players out to enjoy a fun card game. High hands went to Ed Neufeld and Bev Assman and low hands to Helen Sutherland and Ann Brand.
The Borden Friendship Club held their February potluck supper Feb. 26 with 40 out to enjoy the evening. Four new members also joined the club the previous week, bringing membership to 55. There were no birthdays in February so everyone enjoyed cake and ice cream for dessert.
Entertainment was provided by Bob Wadaugh playing accordion, keyboard and singing, Archie Wainwright provided vocals and Sean O'Connor from Saskatoon played button accordion and his special Celtic drum, along with Ann Wardhaugh joining in with her Celtic drum. In between the singing, Archie and Bob told jokes, which got everyone laughing.
The Borden 4-H Light Horse Club held their public speaking Feb. 26 in the Borden School Gym with leaders Taya Richardson and Alana Gunch in charge. The judges for the evening were Cassandra Shangraw, Margaret Thomas and Karen Archibald, all of Saskatoon and Alana was the time keeper.
In juniors the speakers were Teaira Tracksell and Savannah Sutherland. Intermediate speakers were Shawna Langer of Langham, Rachel Sutherland and Cassidy Serhienko of Maymont. Senior level speakers Chantel McLeod of Langham and Emma Prescesky
The judges noted the students were all well prepared, showed eye contact, chose original material, were personally involved and were entertaining. In juniors Savannah was first and Teaira second. IniIntermediates, Cassidy was first, Rachel second and Shawna third and in seniors, Chantelle was first and Emma second. Those earning first and second advance to districts on March 14 in Blaine Lake. Gifts were presented to the judges and medallions and certificates were given to each member.
Condolences are extended to the family of Gus Kindt who passed away Feb. 21 at the age of 73, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Gus grew up at Borden, but lived in Radisson since 1975, along with his wife Darlene (Froom), raising three boys. Gus was the electrician for all those years for Radisson and surrounding area. The service was held Feb. 27 in the Radisson Lutheran Church. Lunch was served in the lower hall following the service with internment at a later date.
The cold was a factor in not much school in Borden the last week. Monday and Friday the wind chill was too high for the buses to run. Feb. 24 Borden had a water main break, so there was no school Tuesday or Wednesday. The water was back on late Wednesday afternoon, but there is a boil water advisory for seven days until all is clear.
Borden School Grades 4 to 12 go skiing March 5. There is a MADD presentation March 11 at 9 a.m. and parent-teacher conferences are March 26 (kindergarten, Grade 1) and March 27 (Grades 2 - 12).
Badminton is underway and seniors practice Tuesdays with conference playoffs April 14 and districts April 16. The juniors practice Thursdays with a game in Hepburn March 12, playoffs April 7, 10 and 12.
The Book Fair was successful in February, having a profit of $550 worth of books. Winning the $500 Borden Lions Scholarship for post secondary education was Tyrell Sargent, who attends the University of Regina.
For the month of February the Borden Gas Plus station and coffee shop had a draw patrons could enter every time they ate there. Winning $100 Feb. 28 was Jean Sawchyn of Borden. The draw will continue for March as well.
March 7 is World Day of Prayer and Radisson Lutheran Church will hold a service at 2:00 p.m. There is no service in Borden this year due to material not ordered.
