Borden Busy Bees Preschool held their graduation for the four-year-olds June 5 in the Borden Community Centre. The hall was decorated with butterflies and bouquets of lilacs on the tables. The 13 three- and four-year-olds sang an action song about butterflies and about fingers; then a video was shown of their year's activities.

Each student went on stage and the seven grads were each presented with a certificate, shovel, bucket full of goodies and a binder titled My Alphabet Book, depicting art work on each page from A - Z. The six three-year-olds also got shovels and buckets with stickers, skipping rope and freezies inside.

A hanging basket was presented to their teacher Elissa Brown from Langham and a flowering planter was also given to co-ordinator Kim Worona. The graduates were Alex O., Talon C., Treyton S., Madison, Jade, Jessica and Jasmyn. Lunch with beverages was then served by the parents. (photo)

Radisson Order of the Royal Purple held their annual Royal Purple Day strawberry tea June 5 in the Radisson Hall with 45 out, who were 50-plus, from Borden, Maymont and Radisson. Jackie Meister played the piano while people were arriving, strawberry shortcake and beverages were served and then Tina Hessell had everyone do a contest on guessing the kind of cake. Jackie played a few old songs for a time of community singing led by Tina and Roberta Harris.

Lorraine Olinyk handed out perfect attendance pins to members for years of not missing a meeting: to Audrey Baker, 12 years; Linda Yuskiw, 14 years; Tina Hessell, 18 years; Roberta Harris, 24 years and Roberta presented Lorraine with her 37-years pin.

Door prizes brought by the members were given out and everyone who came by 3:30 p.m. received a prize although a few latecomers missed out. Borden and Maymont guests thanked the Royal Purple for inviting them to this annual affair.

A Village of Borden information meeting was held June 6 in the Borden Community Centre to deal with a few issues. First topic was the closing of 2nd Avenue West to vehicle travel. Where the road washed out, a foot bridge may be installed. This closure was asked for by residents with families living along this street as the traffic was just going too fast along the road and was becoming dangerous. People have access to the village along the service road.

The second topic was about SAMA tax assessments which some felt were wrong. The village will proceed to appeal the mistakes for 2014, but if anyone had wished to appeal on their own they could have. The appeal had to be filed by June 10 at a cost of $50. If you're successful, you get the money back; but if not, SAMA keeps it. Many questions were asked by the ratepayers about this problem with SAMA and council answered as best they could.

The last topic was regarding the flooding that occurred. Mayor Dave Buckingham spoke very highly of all the volunteers who pitched in to help, many from out of town and with over 1,000 being fed a few days. He thanked the village and RM councillors, staff, the firemen who worked many long hours over the 21 days. It was an amazing event but he hopes never to see it again.

Thanks were also extended to EMO co-ordinator Kandice Brandrick, Ken and Linda Tanchak for the use of their yard to run all the pipes over and the food co-ordinators Elizabeth, Kendall and Denise. The village would like stories and photos to verify all that happened.

Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) will pay for a lot of the expenses. The village pays .01 per cent of current assessed values and Emergency Flood Prevention Relief (EFPR) will pay for some projects. The village may have to pay 15 per cent on some and 7.5 percent on culverts but the sandbags and pumps are covered 100 percent by PDAP. A meeting was held June 9 at the community centre with PDAP and all those who had flooding in their homes regarding getting assistance with renovating their damaged homes.

The big new culvert going in on 2nd Avenue will mostly be funded by the government. In the RM the culverts are all being increased in size and at many washouts two culverts are going in. The village thanked the provincial government for stepping in very quickly with assistance through MLA Randy Weekes.

The village would like ideas regarding the walking trail and where the bridge should be installed northeast of the school grounds. They also need ideas on how to beautify 2nd Avenue West if a walking bridge put in.

Thank you letters will go out to all those who donated to the cause with food, machinery or labour and a special thanks to all the workers from Urban Camp Saskatoon who were out during the flooding and have been out since to empty the thousands of sandbags left.

A special church service was held at Speers United Church June 9 when Borden members joined Speers for their annual joint service. Speers Church was celebrating the 50th anniversary of their building and Phyliss Cunningham read a brief history about the building.

Three girls were confirmed during the service - Megan Jones from Speers and Jesse Wensley and Robynn Pidwerbesky from Borden United Church, with Robynn also being baptized. Gayle Wensley officiated at the service and presented each girl with a Bible and spoke of their commitment to follow the teachings of Jesus. Special music before the service was provided by Diane Jones playing piano and singing, Lucas Lafreniere playing guitar, Sarah Jones on drum and Megan Jones, Kendra and April Lafreniere singing. After the baptism and confirmation, the three girls and their mothers sang Here I Am to Worship - Robynn and Pamela, Megan and Diane, Jesse and Gayle. For holy communion, Robynn, Megan and Jesse assisted Gayle in passing out the bread and the juice.

Following the service a bounteous potluck lunch with Speers providing the burgers, hotdogs and special anniversary cake was enjoyed by all in the lower hall.

A baby shower for Theodore, infant son of Darci Tkaczyk and William Berg of Borden, was held June 9 in the afternoon at the Borden Seniors' Centre. Debbie Hembery was in charge and had decorated the tables with special centrepieces, blue cloths and balloons. She introduced special guests - William's mother Sandra Berg and grandmother Edith Morrison from Asquith and Darci's aunt Paulette Pryma of Aberdeen.

As you signed the guest book, you received a box of goodies and you wrote down some words of wisdom for the new mother. Six jars of unlabelled baby food had Darlene Penner getting four right and she was given a basket of bath articles, which she gave to Darci. Darci opened the gifts and displayed them to everyone. The community gift card with cash had many names on it. Darci thanked everyone for all the gifts and those who donated money, then a lunch of fruit, dainties and punch was served.

Winning the centennial 50/50 monthly draw in Radisson for May was David Friesen who won $202.

In the provincial track and field meet held June 7 and 8 in Moose Jaw, results for the Borden students were: Duncan Sutherland, 15th, junior boys' 3,000m; Emma Pidwerbesky, 18, midget girls' 1500m; Deanna Wall, 18th, senior girls' high jump; Allison Meister, 16th, senior girls' 800m; and in midget boys' discus, Cole Sutherland was 12th. Duncan also ran in an open relay, the 4x 400m for CVAC - Prairie Spirit School Division No. 206 - but they did not place in the top eight.
