At the West Central District Track and Field Meet held May 29, the following athletes from Borden School qualified to advance to provincials in Yorkton June 6 and 7: Rachel Sutherland in midget shot put, Wyatt Piprell in junior 400m, Cole Sutherland in junior shot put and discus and Duncan Sutherland in senior 400m.

The Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper and birthdays May 27, with 45 members out to enjoy the evening. Blowing out the candles on the cake and ice cream brought by Jean Sawchyn and Dianne Rawlyk were Eileen Petrun, Jean Graham, Rita Smith and Ruby Wall.

Special guests were Sam and Christine Bueckert from Waldheim, who are both photographers. Sam played three different instruments – accordion, guitar and banjo – while showing 10 sets of slides and singing songs pertaining to each one. He started out by showing ball photos and reading Casey at the Bat, singing Take Me out to the Ball Game between verses.

His slides were of canola fields – song, Keep on the Sunny Side; a variety of animals – song, Lord is My Shepherd; country churches – songs, Gone Home and Church in the Wildwood; farmyards – song, Mansion Over the Hilltop; the Amish country in Eastern U.S.A., pumpkins – song, Count Your Blessings; covered bridges – songs, To the River and Shall We Gather at the River; threshing days – song, Bringing in the Sheaves; sunsets – song, Beyond the Sunset; and the Harvest for Kids with 299 combines taking part. He declared Borden’s threshing days the best.

Sam had Ruben Rempel join in on one of the hymns and concluded by yodelling to Hallelujah Time – Come to Jesus.

Radisson Royal Purple No. 347 sponsored a poster and video contest on Keeping Your Brain Healthy. The winners in each category went on to the provincial competition with prize money donated by the Saskatchewan Elks Foundation.

Tina Hessell and Lorraine Olinyk will be going to Maymont Central School this upcoming week to present cheques to Anneka Harder in Grade 1– $50 for third in beginner poster; to Carlee Hamilton and Keeley Bzdel – $150 for second in the video contest; and to Audrey Friesen – $125 for third place in the video contest.

Presentations will be made at Borden to five students at the awards night June 18.
