Flooding, drought and fires in some areas

Spring is finally here even though it feels more like summer, which is causing a few problems around the countryside. Even though many places are flooding, drought is hitting other areas.

Fires have been raging through some areas of the province causing the need for bans. Fire bans have been put on in many areas of Saskatchewan and even through Alberta due to the lack of precipitation and the warm arid conditions. Paynton has followed suit and put on a partial ban allowing small covered bonfires and agricultural stubble burns with a permit.

The permit is free and just has a couple of stipulations such as having enough water on hand and the right equipment to control the fire. Do not burn on windy days and always call 911 if it starts getting away on you. Call the RM office at 306-895-2020 for more info and for a permit.

To help fight fires, learn fire safety and become part of the Paynton volunteer firefighter family; show up at one of the weekly meetings held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. if you want supper. They understand most people have jobs and family obligations that could interfere with practice so don't worry if you cannot make all of the meetings. Practices are at the fire hall located at the Pioneer Centre garage and the arena where the trucks are housed. Call 306-903-7122 for more information.

Paynton spring craft sale was held May 11. The Mother's Day sale and lunch was enjoyed by many locals and even a few out-of-towners who love to buy local and support the library with their lunch orders. Vendors with art, baking, books, bags, crafts, chocolate and more were supported by their loyal patrons.

The next craft sale will be in November and there will not be a weekly farmers' market this year. Stay tuned for special events they may be holding through the summer.
