"Fit and Fabulous at any Age"...is the motto behind Harwood Manor's exercise group as we venture out to the field house once a week. When we first began the walking program four residents had signed up and were able to manage twice around the track with a rest in between. Now six weeks later, we have eight residents who have been attending regularly and are proud to say they can manage at least four laps, while Olive Pulsfrod, Doreen Taylor and Leona Esquirol are showing off with six. Considering the average is 87, and some require the aid of a walker, this is quite an accomplishment. We owe our drive, dedication and progress to fellow resident and head coach, James Taylor. He will set the pace walking the first round with us, then he sits on the bench by the elevator and waves us by when we think about resting. During the rest of the week, the recreation staff offer strengthening exercises and armchair yoga classes.

The Great Room at Harwood Manor was the scene of a family reunion recently as resident Helen Blanchette celebrated her 90th birthday. Alongside her husband of 69 years, Rudy, Helen shared her day with 33 family members including grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Her four daughters travelled from Victoria, B.C., Sundre, Alta. and Dauphin, Man., while her three sons came from Vawn, Edam, and Battleford. Helen and Rudy were the first couple to enter Harwood in April 2012. Helen's arrival had been delayed for a short while due to a stay at Battlefords Union Hospital, so Rudy enjoyed every minute of being pampered by a crew of staff eager and willing to accommodate his needs. This included playing several games of his favourite card game, cribbage.

We celebrated the arrival of Spring with our first barbecue of the season, which was such a hit we hosted another one last weekend. Russell, the head cook, was busy grilling steaks made to order, while staff served baked potatoes, salad and garlic toast.

The residents tried to master the fine art of floral arranging after Milbanke Flowers delivered over 200 daisies/carnations and baby's breath, so we could design centrepieces for Mothers Day. Special thank you to volunteer Robin Iverson for sharing her talents with us and assisting with the 30 cubes. Now we are looking forward to adding some colour to the yard with the recent purchase of bedding plants and an upcoming visit to a local greenhouse.

Thought for the season, may flowers always light your path and sunshine light your day. May songbirds serenade you every day along the way.
