A stop in Humboldt will be part of the first cross-country torch relay for the Canada Winter Games.
The torch started its journey at the Centennial Flame in Ottawa Oct. 4. It will stop in Humboldt Nov. 7 before it goes west to BC. It will loop back and reach the games鈥 host community of Red Deer for the opening ceremonies.
There will be a celebration at Jubilee Hall from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm, with a ceremony during the noon hour.
鈥淲e鈥檒l have a lighting ceremony with representatives from the Canada Games, the mayor will say something, somebody from MNP as well and we鈥檒l cap it off with a charity barbeque that鈥檚 being put on by the Humboldt Co-op,鈥 said Kevin Meldrum with MNP, which is sponsoring the torch relay.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a great way to support the community, it鈥檚 a great way to support amateur athletics and being that it鈥檚 the first one, it鈥檚 a historic event, so I think it鈥檇 be fantastic for everyone in the community to come out and support it.鈥
The money raised during the event will be donated to KidSport.
After the torch leaves Humboldt, it will head toward Prince Albert and Saskatoon.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 great that the torch is making a lot of stops in smaller communities across the country, Humboldt being one of them,鈥 Meldrum said. 鈥淚t brings such a great vibe to the community, there鈥檚 such a strong community involvement when it stops at a small location and we鈥檙e really looking forward to it.鈥
The torch will stop at the Uniplex鈥檚 Jubilee Hall from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
