Firefighters meet for fall training session

Volunteerism at its best was experienced in North Battleford this past weekend. From Oct. 12 to 14, volunteer firefighters congregated from all over the province to learn new skills and safety procedures.

Volunteerism at its best was experienced in North Battleford this past weekend. From Oct. 12 to 14, volunteer firefighters congregated from all over the province to learn new skills and safety procedures.

Offering 15 courses ranging from wild land firefighting to vehicle extrication and self rescue, the North Battleford Fire Department and Saskatchewan Volunteer Fire Fighters Association did a superb job. Not only did they teach, but they made sure corporate sponsorship played a role in feeding and entertaining the211 students and 22 instructors, plus 10 host department members.

Thanks to outfits like Colya J Fire Services, SaskPower, SaskEnergy and many of the businesses in North Battleford, everyone was kept happy.

The SVFFA held their annual general meeting where newdirectors were voted in.Paynton and Maidstone firefighters were able to participate in this year's fall fire school and came back with knowledge that can save others and themselves.

Classes were taught by volunteers from all over, from agencies like the Ministry of the Environment teaching wild land and professional firefighters volunteering time to teach.

Fire behaviour and practical knowledge are equally important to being able to do the job safely. This knowledge will help firefighters to make the safe decision when in a panic situation. To join the Paynton Volunteer Fire Department please call 895-4225 or come to the next meeting Wednesday Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., 6:30 for supper at the Paynton Fire Hall.

Paynton Library Ladies will be holding their annual pumpkin carving contest Oct. 30. This is a free event held in the Paynton gym and is open to all ages. There are carving tools and pumpkins available along with supper to follow. It is a pumpkin inspired event so squash inspired meals are on the menu. Bring the whole family to winprizes for all agecategories from zero to 100, no experience is necessary.Feel free to dress up, the librarian doesn't want to be the only one.
