Firefighters host provincial curling this weekend

The provincial firefighters' bonspiel is being hosted by the Borden firefighters Feb. 8 to 10, with curling at Radisson Curling Club. A total of eight rinks had registered by Saturday, with one from Borden and one from Radisson.

The provincial firefighters' bonspiel is being hosted by the Borden firefighters Feb. 8 to 10, with curling at Radisson Curling Club. A total of eight rinks had registered by Saturday, with one from Borden and one from Radisson. Friday will see three draws, the opening ceremonies around 1 p.m., the annual general meeting and a pizza meal at the rink. Saturday will be curling until evening when the banquet will be held in Borden, catered by the Borden Lions Club. Sunday will continue most of the day with curling until a winner is declared. The winning rink will go on to national firefighting curling.

The Borden Friendship Club held their potluck supper and birthday cake Jan. 30 with over 30 out to enjoy a great meal. Birthday cakes were brought by Doreen Flath and Florence Neufeld and Happy Birthday was sung to Elizabeth Derksen and Lorraine Olinyk. The entertainment for the evening was the Sumpets - Dave and Laurie Summers and David and Inda Petriew from Radisson. Laurie and David play guitars and Dave and Inda (with clackers) provide the singing along with the backup of Laurie and David. They closed with Amazing Grace, sung without accompanying instruments.

The Borden Threshermen's Club held their annual potluck supper and program Feb. 2 in the Borden Community Centre, with over 75 out to enjoy a great variety of food and listen to Redberry Grass perform. Stephanie, David and Sam Derbawka of Borden are Redberry Grass. They played a great variety of music including a few songs Sam had written.

Sam plays a variety of instruments - guitar, mandolin, ukulele, violin - while David plays guitar and Stephanie plays a specialized steel guitar. They all sing solos with backup from the other two. Their mother Marlene joined in with clackers on a few songs and sang Down to the River to Pray with Stephanie. They closed with Fishing in the Dark, Honky Tonk and Fox on the Run.

Orolow Ukrainian Catholic Church/Hall held their annual snowmobile rally Feb. 2 with 190 riders out for the day. Raffle tickets winners were: first prize, $1175 - Trent Janz of Waldheim; second prize, $705 - Ann Kostiuk of Saskatoon; third prize, $470 - Shane Krueger of Saskatoon. Special draws of $75 went to Peter Prystupa and Vern Brown of Borden, and Dale Bodnarchuk.

Condolences go to the relatives at Radisson of Katie Gabrysh who passed away Jan. 29 at the age of 85 years, with burial at Radisson. Condolences also to Ed and Barb Golding and family of Borden on the passing of their son Casey in Halifax.

An upcoming event at both Borden and Radisson is a Shrove Tuesday pancake and sausage supper Feb. 12. In Borden, the Anglican and United Churches host the supper at the seniors' centre starting at 5:15 p.m. In Radisson, the Lutheran Church hosts in the church basement at 5 p.m.

The PWOS (Prairie Women on Snowmobiles) will be in Radisson for lunch at the Communiplex Feb. 7. People are welcome to drop in for lunch to support breast cancer research.

Borden seniors will hold a Kaiser tournament at 7 p.m. Feb. 12 and bingo Feb. 19, also at 7 p.m.

The Grade 7 and 8 class is holding a dessert theatre in the community centre at 7 p.m., Feb. 14, with the play The Food Drive. They are collecting food donations for a local food bank and cash for a project to build a well in Ghana, Africa. The class is going to WE (Free the Children) day in Saskatoon Feb. 27, when 15,000 schoolchildren from all across Saskatchewan will be at Credit Union Centre to hear special music and celebrity actors such as Martin Sheen and Mia Farrow.

The Borden seniors hold their annual Telemiracle Valentine tea at 2 p.m. Feb. 15. Later that evening, at 7 p.m., the Grade 9 and 10 class is coming to the centre to play games and provide lunch for all those 50-plus.

The school snow angels start their volunteer shovelling project in the village Feb. 5 for anyone who signed the sheets.

A fundraiser for Curtis Crabb, who is undergoing six weeks of aggressive treatment for a brain tumor, will be held Feb. 16, with a shinny tournament from noon - 8 p.m. at the outdoor rink in Borden, along with a chili lunch, silent auction and a special Crabb-y Patty meal at the hotel.
