There were only three days of classes last week due to the two days of staff professional development. However, a lot of activities were packed into those three days.

It was Education Week and this year's theme was "Supporting and Celebrating Success." The hallways were filled with students' work from all subjects as well as pictures of the sports' teams in action. It was also Saskatchewan Library Week.

A school and community breakfast was held in recognition of Education Week and Bus Driver Appreciation Day, Oct. 23. Staff, students and community members were treated to fresh fruit, muffins and fresh cinnamon buns baked by Sandra Large.

Following the breakfast, there was an assembly to celebrate many of the school's successes. Jean Brehon was the MC for the event. The assembly began with O Canada. It was sung extra loudly as tribute was paid to the fallen soldiers in Ottawa.

Jean introduced the staff and bus drivers. She explained some of the activities staff members participate in for the fall and thanked the bus drivers for their hard work.

Rick Bailey, the newly elected SCC chairman, spoke about the role of the SCC.

The Grade 1 class sang a cute little song about learning to read. This was followed by SLC President, Carlee Hamilton. She introduced the SLC members and talked about the successful events the SLC has organized this year.

Keeley Bzdel has organized the "Me to We" club and spoke about the planned activities for this group including the Christmas shoeboxes that will be filled by each grade to send to other children.

The Grades 2 to 5 classes sang a Humpty Dumpty song and showed some of their artwork to celebrate the arts in the school.

The soccer coaches, Ryan Nickell and Roxanne Jordan, along with the volleyball coaches, Kandice Walker, Cathy Gillatt and Krista Gray, all spoke about their teams' successes. All coaches mentioned how their teams' skills have all improved and, more importantly, the excellent sportsmanship that all teams display.

The school's librarian talked about the new books that have been purchased for the library and the books and poster draw for Education Week. She also mentioned the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair that will take place during the week of Nov. 17 to 21.

The assembly concluded with a few words from Mr. Lockwood.

The next activity for Education Week was a team-building activity for all students and staff. The entire student body was divided into teams with students from each grade. There were also two staff teams. Each team was given two bags of balloons, some tape and a pair of scissors. They had 20 minutes to build a chair that would support a Grade 12 student for 15 seconds. The chairs were tested after the 20 minutes and the two staff chairs and one student chair were the only ones to survive. It was a fun, creative team-building activity.

The winners of the library draws were as follows. Brian Healey, Grade 5, won the poster and D'Ocean Delorme, Grade 6; Bailey Lake, Grade 1; and Madison Welford, kindergarten, each won a book.

The senior girls' soccer team attended the 7 vs. 7 provincial playoffs in Middle Lake, Oct. 24. They played Osler and Martensville. They lost both of these games but represented the school very well.

The senior boys' soccer team hosted provincials in North Battleford. There were four teams in attendance. They were Maymont, Meadow Lake, Middle Lake and Osler. Osler won the tournament. The MCS boys finished fourth. They were excellent hosts for the event.

Many of our high school students looked after video cameras so the games could be televised over the computer.

The junior girls' volleyball team will participate in the northern conferences this weekend at North Battleford Comprehensive High School. There are eight teams attending and the top four teams will advance to district playoffs Nov. 6.

The SLC sponsored a costume or black and orange day on Halloween. Students could wear their Halloween costumes to school or wear black and orange clothing instead of a costume. The SLC made a haunted house for students to venture through and held a dance in the afternoon for elementary students.

Please remember to come and watch the senior girls' volleyball team Saturday at the school.Photo Filename:
