A group of 41 students and four staff from H. Hardcastle School were lucky enough to attend Saskatchewan's very first We Day at Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon on Feb. 2. The group was treated to live performances by Hedley, Shawn Desman, Karl Wolf and One Drop and they were deeply touched by motivational speakers such as Martin Sheen, Mia Farrow, Molly Burke and Jake Zeldin.

Saskatoon's Credit Union Centre was packed with 15,000 students and teachers and the atmosphere was electric. The students came away inspired to do more for their community and less fortunate communities in other countries.

The students have been collecting pennies for the We Create Change penny drive and now that the weather has warmed up, they will be going door to door in our community collecting pennies in the hopes of filling 50 penny bags by the end of the school year. Each bag of pennies will give one less fortunate person clean water for the rest of their life.

The students will also be involved in other fundraising activities throughout the rest of the year with the proceeds going to local charities. The students are excited about the opportunity to make a difference in the world.

Students who attended We Day were Blake Blais, Brandon Burgess, Raina Cole, Macey Levasseur, Natasha Nedelec, Chelsea Bec, Ryan Becotte, Jessica Curry, Brittany Nedelec, Kesha Schaefer, Cordell Beynon., Mason Blais, Elexis Bourrier, Taya Cole, Mason Detillieux, Zach Gordon, Jayden Manastyrski, Melissa Monteith, Payton Morin, Brandon Nash, Tayla Poole, Tyson Long, Brittany Bec, Jesse Cadrain, Emily Levasseur, Wyatt Malenfant, Kalie Nordell, Kennedy Schaefer, Breanna Wouters, Madison Detillieux, Kaitlyn McCarthy, Keinyn Nordell, Hailey Shewchuk, Berlin Sinclair-Sommerfeld, Shanae Blaquiere, Caleb Greening, Emma Head, Brandi Kobes, Henri L'Heureux, Kelcey McCarthy and Brooke Roach. Staff members who travelled with them were Jolene Sittler, Terra Schaefer, Darren Nordell and Tanith Wallebeck.

The H.H.S. Royals curling teams have had another successful season and one of their busiest. The senior mixed team consisting of Jesse Cadrain as skip, Brittany Bec and Kaitlyn McCarthy sharing third, Dallon Becotte as second and Hailey Shewchuk and ShaeLynn Nedelec sharing lead, with Mason Detillieux as alternate, attended district play in Meadow Lake Feb. 6. Their record throughout the day was one win and two losses which found them unable to advance to regionals. The students represented H.H.S. with sportsmanship, and fair play as well as some excellent shots. They are also mentors for the younger curlers in the school program.

The Junior Royals team travelled to St. Walburg for conference playoffs. Skip Lindon Goodall guided his Grade 6 frontend to second place and a berth in the district play in St. Walburg Feb. 27. The Grade 6 students who travelled to districts with Lindon were Isaiah Morin, Brady Deobald, Hunter Goodall, Ryan Bec, and Tanner Long. Danika Holloway also practiced with the team but was unable to curl with them in both playdowns.

Feb. 27 the team won three consecutive games against Bishop Lloyd boys, Loon Lake mixed and Neilburg mixed which brought them to face the St Walburg mixed team. They were in their third back-to-back game and were unable to defeat a strong St. Walburg team and were the proud recipients of the silver medal out of 10 teams that played that day. It is noted that this team of one Grade 8 student and five Grade 6 students can be proud of their accomplishment against teams of Grade 7, 8 and 9 students.

Other younger students who have started their curling careers in Grade 4 and 5 are Jaxon Harty, Abbey Harty, Kylee Bec, Nadian Holloway, Clayton Wolfe, and Haylee Olson. They would like to thank the Knights of Columbus No. 5694 for the donation of 12 new brushes to the school curling program, Kim Goodall for her help at practices and parent drivers, as well as to the Edam Curling Club for their continued support of the program. There was a challenge issued to the staff of H.H.S. by the curlers who have represented their school in playoffs. This curling showdown will take place at the Edam Curling Rink on Thursday 4 p.m. The students will also be taking a silver collection to be donated to Telemiracle.
