Time to get a little bit of housecleaning done before the summer is over. There were a few Edam boys taking part in club volleyball this past winter and the following is a report submitted by Coach Lorne Long.

NorthWest Fury wraps up with national success

The NorthWest Fury Volleyball Club concluded their inaugural season with a 13th place showing at the 15 and under boys' national championships held in Regina May 17 to 20. The championship brought together 36 of the top U15 boys' teams from around the country.

The Fury finished second in pool play, beating their provincial rivals from Saskatoon as well as a team from Edmonton. The second day of competition was not as kind to the boys as they battled hard but finished third in their pool. The final day saw the team lose to a strong team from Fraser Valley which placed the team 13th overall.

During the season the Fury played four tournaments, resulting in tournament wins in Moose Jaw and Prince Albert and a fourth place finish in Regina. The provincial championships were held in Saskatoon where the team finished fourth after an extremely hard-fought loss in the semifinals to the Saskatoon Huskies.

The team was made up of players from around the Northwest: Edam - Bailey Morin, Zach Gordon, Tyson Long, Mason Blais; Paradise Hill - Travis Maier; Hillmond - Cole Lindsay; Makwa Saheguin - Harlan Kytwayhat; and Meadow Lake - Brenan Kuffert. Coaches were Lorne Long, Zach Halwachs and Mike Lee.

"These young men should be extremely proud of their accomplishments this year on both a provincial and national stage," said Coach Mike Lee. "To be able to compete with not only the best teams in the province but the best teams in the country is something the team can take great pride in," added Lee.

The team is already looking forward to next year which will culminate in the national championships in Calgary, Alta.

Other news for Edam is the June winners of the trip of the month: congratulations to Garry and Elaine Poole and Bryce and Andrea Thom who won $100.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the sixth annual rodeo Aug. 23 - 24 at the Edam Community Centre, featuring professional rodeo clown barrel man Dennis Halstead, two-time Canadian Entertainer of the Year. Thursday will once again showcase local talent with the amateur bull riding event.

Rodeo performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. the evenings of Aug. 23 and 24. A pancake breakfast will take place from 7:30 - 10:00 a.m. the morning of Aug. 24, sponsored by the Edam firefighters and held at the Edam Community Centre. Beef on a bun will be available at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 24 and a rodeo dance featuring The Prairie Dogs takes place at 9:30 p.m., also Aug. 24. During the intermissions the entertainment will be mutton busting for ages five and six Thursday, greased pig catch for ages seven to nine Friday and greased pig catch for ages 10 to12 Saturday.

Please watch for posters for the admission information.

Things have slowed down in the area and therefore there probably won't be much to report on until school starts again. I will take this opportunity to take some time for myself and hopefully get caught up with some reading, as well as some other things that need to be attended to. Have a great rest of the summer!
