Last weekend was a busy one at the Unity Regional Park ball diamonds as both the UK Royals Junior Ladies’ fastpitch and the Cardinals Bantam A Boys’ baseball teams hosted their respective provincial championships.
The diamonds were busy throughout the weekend and parent volunteers showcased just how good we are in this community at hosting events. The booth was a coveted place to please the palate, the ball games were fantastic and there were some happy people who capitalized on their 50/50 and scoro purchases. Thanks to everyone for their support of this weekend.
The UK Royals, who have held the provincial title for three consecutive years, ended their weekend in a thriller of a game against the Earl Grey Heat, but were not able to capture their fourth provincial title. However, placing second advances them to the Western Canadian Fastpitch Championship upcoming in Surrey, B.C., Aug. 6 to 9, as Team Saskatchewan 2.
The bantam boys, looking to earn their provincial title, ended their weekend Saturday night in a tough loss to Lumsden, leaving them out of playoffs Sunday.
The mosquito boys captured a provincial title in the mosquito boys’ baseball A division.
What’s left for ball in town you might ask? Well, it’s not over yet. The softball side has completed their provincial quests. Now the bantam B team, who advanced out of their provincials, will head to Regina for the U16 Western Canadian Championship August long weekend.
Baseball’s mosquitos, peewee AA team and the bantam AA team are still heading to their respective provincial championships.
Got some bored kids and grandkids? You are encouraged to take part in the Summer Fun Centre offered at the community centre each weekday from 10 to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., with every Wednesday having movies from 7 to 9 p.m. Children five to11 are welcome to attend with a low fee of $50 for the summer or a $5 drop-in rate. Activities include games, crafts, slip and slides and much more.
Coffee row folks are still hopeful for the Riders, even knowing the injury plague has greatly affected their lineup, leaving them as the only winless team in the CFL. Rains on the July 17 weekend sparked some hope for this year’s crop season. The long-standing northern fires that have been assisted by rains in that area are certainly still a discussion on the topic table, sadly. As well fans of local ball teams also discuss the past and upcoming provincial quests. So you keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next time …
