Donations given out by Glenside RM recreation board

The recreation board of the RM of Glenside held the first meeting of a new season Sept. 8 at the home of Dorothy Mills.

The recreation board of the RM of Glenside held the first meeting of a new season Sept. 8 at the home of Dorothy Mills.

The 2013 programs and donations were all completed and receipts were sent to headquarters by the end of June in order to be issued a new grant for the upcoming season. Donations were once again given out to the Biggar Diamond Lodge, Maymont Dance Club, Sonningdale Senior Quilters and Ranger Lake Bible Camp, for starters; there was also some set aside for a wallet/purse-making class to be held at a later date at the Baljennie Community Centre.

Letters will be sent out to two active groups in the Lizard Lake area as we got no requests for a donation from them, and no one of their area attended the meeting to ask for what they would like to receive. The Baljennie and Spinney Hill board members were at the meeting.

The club is looking for a new president as Dorothy Mills has held the position since 2000 and now would like to retire.

The next meeting is set for Nov. 3 at the home of Irene Greer in Baljennie. The club is still open for new ideas on what type of activities and donations are needed, as well as open for new members.

The harvesting was going full swing until all of a sudden it came to a halt with heavy rainfall and much cooler temperatures. There was also some frost in lower areas, while in other areas there was only a touch of frost. The pea and canola fields that were ready to go were being combined. The canola is just about all in swathes - just waiting for better weather to dry them out for combining. Most pea fields are now done, and only the cereal grains are left to swath and combine.

The crops will be no bumper crops this fall due to the weather we have been having all season, and due to the insects, the mould and the fungus. Yields will certainly be down a lot. Some standing crops are logging and going down; others are facing a light frost, cutting back yields and lowering grades. It will be a challenge to get it all done.

Baling hay has near ended and some bales are being hauled to the farm feed yards. Swath grazing fields are all cut.

We are so thankful that the whole area missed the heavy snowfall near Calgary and other parts of Alberta.

Weed control officer John Hammond for the RM of Glenside has been making his rounds to the special weed spots to spray and keep them under control. Leafy spurge and the tall deep yellow tansy are the worst to control. Tansy has been spreading from western areas into our own area. It spreads so fast by seed and has a strong root.

There have been several gravel trucks in the area, spreading gravel on the main roads throughout the RM of Glenside. The RM mower has been making its rounds cutting the tall grass, brush and weeds on all of the roadsides.

A big moose was hit and killed at Williams Lake in the Battle River RM. Keep an eye out for them as there are a lot of moose about and they can appear on the roadside at any time.

School bells are ringing again. The school buses started running Sept. 2 with Irene Greer once more the school bus driver from the local area. There are four new students on the bus from the local area. By the time the bus gets to Battleford, there is a total busload of 26 students. Take care and watch for the bus stops.
