Meota News

The monthly meeting of the Do Drop In was held Feb. 12. The matter of updating the plaques with names of deceased members is being taken care of by Gwen Lacerte. The matter of the ladies bathroom door is also being taken care of. The annual meeting will be on March 11 so please come out to support the club. The next shuffleboard tournament will be on March 19. Seniors are invited to Edam on March 17, more next week about this.Ìý

The shuffleboard tournament held Feb. 20 was a lot of fun and great socializing. Top couple was Beth Wynne and Cora Christiansen, second were Joyce Antoine and Linda Ard and third was tied by Robert Iverson and Jack Stewart and Ken Tucker and Svend Christiansen. The pot luck lunch was centred around two pots of delicious soup and a variety of desserts. A few games of Chit Chat were enjoyed, also, between games.

The February noon luncheon at the hall on Friday found road conditions very treacherous which slowed down the attendance considerably, however, the hall committee was ever grateful for the amount collected and said so. Everyone enjoyed the salad and lasagna feast as well as the many desserts along with the friendly company of their neighbours.

An evening of trump whist was enjoyed at the Vawn Hall Feb. 12 with 23 adults, a goodly turnout of players. They are such a friendly community and everyone has fun socializing with them. Top ladies score brought a nice prize for Beth Wynne and low score was by Juliette Blais, men’s high was Eddie McCaffrey and low was Jack Stewart. The travelling ladies' prize went to Jolene Nedelec and the travelling men’s prize went to Ken Greening. It was a nice evening and nice weather, too.

Duplicate bridge was played in Meota Feb. 16 with top score by Mary Greenwald and David Sharpe, second were Linda Ard and Maureen Campbell and third was tied by three couples. So these were very close games with stiff competition.Ìý

Duplicate bridge was played in town on Feb 18 with top score by Donna Scherman and Catriona Winterholt, second by Terence and Jetta Dasilva and third were Mary Greenwald and David Sharpe.

Beth Wynne from Taber, Alta., has spent two weeks with her mother, Lorna Pearson, in Meota and has enjoyed so much to play cards and take part in community events. I’m sure she’ll be back again.

Word has come of the passing of Yolande (Orieux) Pearson of Kelowna, on Feb. 16, at 89 years of age. Yolande grew up in the Leoville district and married Richard in the church at Laventure (which is now in Spiritwood) in 1950. They raised their family in Courtenay, B.C. where they had a meat market before retiring to Parker’s Cove near Vernon and later moving into Kelowna where they were near their daughter Colleen and Kelly Preston and their family.Ìý

Contract bridge was played in the Do Drop In Feb. 22 with top score by Warren Iverson and second by Mary Greenwald.

A Columbine charter bus took a full load of senior citizens out to Mayfair on Sunday, the 21st where they enjoyed a live adult comedy play, Hotbed Hotel. The meal at 1 p.m. that preceded the play was produced by the local Mayfair Rec Board and was most delicious. It was a merry afternoon with one laugh after another, right to the end. Such talent and so much work had gone into the preparation, it is hard to imagine how they got it all in place so successfully. The road conditions were not ideal and the driver did an excellent job on that skinny highway with icy patches, and got his load there safely. He loaded and unloaded passengers at Towers 2 and at Davidson Manor and was back to town in daylight.

A family relative had a terrible accident in Fort Saskatchewan recently when she was out at 6:30 in the morning for her daily walk or run. She was crossing the street on a green light and this fellow in a truck drove through the red light and hit her. She looked at him as he did this and he was looking down at his cell phone and not at her. He didn’t know he’d hit her until he heard her screaming – under his vehicle. She is suffering head injuries, wasn’t wearing a helmet ,of course, and has three small children depending on her for their care. We can only pray that she will recover well. Such an avoidable accident should never have happened.
