Most people associate dirt and worms with a garden, but last week it was the food offered for sale by the SLC. Students and staff were treated to a container filled with chocolate pudding, whipped cream, chocolate cake and several jellied worms on top. The tasty treat really looked like dirt with worms, but tasted a lot better.
It was a very busy weekend for Maymont Central School athletes. The senior girls' soccer team host the 7 vs. 7 regional playoffs. It started Friday at 3 p.m. and continued Saturday. There were five teams involved in the playoffs.
The girls played their first game Friday. There was a strong, cold wind but the girls played well. They played against Cando and the score was tied for most of the game. Finally, the girls pulled it all together and won 7 to 4.
On Saturday morning, they played against FC Valley. It was a beautiful day for soccer and the game ended in a 3-3 tie after regulation time. Maymont battled hard and won the game 4 to 3 in overtime. They advanced to the final against Sandy Lake.
The girls lost the final game 4-1, but both Sandy Lake and Maymont advanced to the provincial playoffs Oct. 24 and 25.
The senior boys' soccer team travelled to Onion Lake for their regional playoffs. They lost their first game but, because the school is hosting provincials, the boys automatically advanced.
The junior girls' volleyball team attended a 10-team tournament in Medstead Oct. 18. The teams were divided into two pools of five.
The girls played very well, winning six of their eight games in the round robin. This meant they finished in second place and advanced to the playoff round. Only four of the 10 teams made the playoff round.
They played Spiritwood in the semifinal game. Spiritwood had finished first in the other pool. The girls played very well, exhibiting a lot of volleyball skills and sportsmanship. The games were very close but Spiritwood prevailed.
This week, they host Hafford for some exhibition games Thursday. The girls' conference playoffs are on Nov. 1.
Jean Brehon, Twyla Stott and Cathy Gillatt, along with several family members, attended "Friday Night Lights" in Hafford Oct. 17. Three of the high school boys - Cody Greenslade, Riley Rookes and Conner Garrett - play football with the Hafford Vikings football team. This was the final game of the season, against the Outlook Blues.
Hafford hosted a tailgate party in the gym where you could purchase a hamburger or hot dog and listen to a local band. Pictures of the football team played continuously through a PowerPoint presentation.
The football field was lit up and there was a large crowd. The atmosphere was electric and people cheered for their hometown boys. It was six-man football and, even though it was a cold evening, everyone seemed to be having a great time. The hot chocolate stand along the sideline did a brisk business.
At halftime, there was a fireworks display. A few people took advantage of the time to warm up in their vehicles.
The Vikings won 63 to 19. It was a great evening in Hafford.
The senior girls' volleyball team is having a tournament in Maymont Saturday, Nov. 1.*** Everyone is welcome to come to the school to watch some great volleyball.
Interim reports were sent home Friday. These mid-term reports are filled out by both the student and teacher. Sometimes they don't exactly agree, but they are a chance to improve before the first term report cards.
Arin Amson, Grade 7, made the tier 2 peewee girls' hockey team in Saskatoon. Good job, Arin!
The school community was pleased to hear Joanne Tebay is home from the hospital. Staff and students hope to see her smiling face back at school very soon!
