Curling teams compete in district playdowns

Did March come in like a lamb or a lion? I doubt anyone would notice as Old Man Winter has been as crusty as the character in those commercials. When winter begins Oct. 20, everyone is looking for a reprieve of any kind.

UCHS junior curling teams headed to districts in Kerrobert on Feb. 26 and 27. The boys' team included Spencer Powell, Cody Thompson, Todd Bazely and Zak Bos. Robin Sperle, Cyane Sperle, Caitlyn Ireland and Caprice Sherwood were on the ice in girls' action and the mixed team was comprised of Lyndon Jellison, Daphne Boser, Dakota Kloster and Marina Gampe.

Junior and senior basketball teams will be heading to district and conference playoffs the first weekend of March.

Students from UCHS and St. Peter's, along with other schools in the area, attended We Day in Saskatoon on Feb. 27. Energy and excitement will fuel these kids to be part of the movement to help be part of the change people want to see in the world.

The undefeated midget A team just keeps on rolling. They easily won their first round of playoffs against Rosetown. They are awaiting the winner between Battleford and Martensville to see who their next opponents will be. They also swept their two-game total point series with Rosthern winning their away game 9-3 and their home game 6-0. The will now play in the league semifinal as well as the Northern final in their provincial quest.

The midget AA team lost both their league playoffs and their provincial quest. Unity midget AA players Alex Pernitsky and Blake Robertson are preparing for the zone tournament in March.

Both pee wee teams have advanced to the second round of their league playoffs. A combined pee wee team is still playing in provincial playoffs, as they beat Turtleford in the opening round.

The atom division had both Unity teams facing off in their league playoffs with the atom red taking the first game with a 6-5 score.

The Miners won their provincial B two-game total point weries handily over Biggar. They will now face Shaunavon. Winning a game apiece in league playoffs sent the Miners to a game three in Eatonia, which they lost in the final few minutes of the game.

Brittany Hauta and Samantha David are playing for the Neilburg A midget girls' Monarchs. They won their first round of provincials against Meadow Lake and now face Elrose. They packed a big score on Saskatoon in their first league playoff game. Heather Wood plays for the West Central Midget AA girls' team who, after earning first in their league, got a bye to the league semifinal and are awaiting their opponent. They tied the first game of the provincial northern final against Prince Albert and play March 3 in a two-game total point series. Braden Lacoursiere has definitely made his mark on the Battlefords AAA Midget Stars as he is the top scoring defenceman. They start their best of five opening league playoff series against the Contacts. Isaac L'Heureux, is enjoying his season with the AA Tier 1 Battleford Barons Atom team.

Unity Curling Club president, Glen Heit, competed in senior men's provincial playdowns in Assiniboia that started Feb. 20 and ran through the weekend. Glen's wife, Wanda, who curls with team Darlene Gilles and Brad Heidt's wife Tracey (and Darlene Kloschinsky) headed to senior women's provincials in Martensville the Feb. 20 weekend. Neither team saw the wins they were hoping for.

The annual Oilman's Bonspiel runs Thursday to Sunday. This is followed by the Bramiche Farms ladies' bonspiel on the March 16 weekend, followed by the annual year-end funspeil.

Friday is the Unity Skating Club's annual ice carnival with the theme of A Few of My Favourite Things. Four long time club members - Kaitlyn Robertson, Jenna Winterhalt, Robin Belliveau and Brandi Braun - will be performing in their last ice carnival as they graduate this June.

Minor ball registration takes place on March 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the community centre. There will be an annual general meeting to follow.

TrailerFest is Sunday at 2 p.m. at Second Avenue Cinema. Movie goers can come for a program approximately 45 minutes in length to see all the new releases due out this spring and summer. Door prizes will also be drawn for. Admission is free.

The 2013 Lenten Worship services and lunches will be held March 6 at the Baptist Church, March 13 at the United Church and March 20 at the Catholic Church. All lunches begin at noon starting with a brief worship session followed by the meal. A silver collection benefitting the Unity Ministerial Association in their work will be taken.

A "Celebrate Unity" evening will be a talent auction. Business owners and managers are offering themselves for personal time and services to be bid on. One of the services offered is the "Four Sunny Mopsies" consisting of staff from Sunrise Wellness Spa offering four maids for two hours of cleaning service. Two individuals will be receiving Diamond Jubilee Medals at Celebrate Unity. This is an evening to recognize outstanding individuals and groups in the community, as well as new and retired businesses over the past year.

The 31st annual Ducks Unlimited Banquet and Auction is Saturday, March 16 at the community centre.

Coffee row folks were excited to exclaim their happiness with the new Canadian Scotties winner, Rachel Homan. They are now reviewing their thumbs up or thumbs down votes for teams that will appear at this year's Tim Horton's Brier. The "rowers" are also putting in guesses on what remains in store for winter, commenting on all that winter has dealt our area so far, as well as making some spring predictions This is a fun group full of laughter and optimism.
