The school's senior mixed curling teams participated in the conference playoffs in Spiritwood on Feb. 9 and 10. The first team consisted of Sean and Meghan Brehon, Conner Garrett and Cassidy Serhienko. They lost both of their games so were eliminated from the playoffs. They played well and were excellent ambassadors for the school.
The other team included Tyson Wawryk, Carleee Hamilton, Jan Friesen and Brayden Harris, who was substituting for an injured Connor Rothenburger. This team won a game and lost a game, but qualified to return the next day. They lost a really close game to Cut Knife in the final end and were eliminated from the competition. Thanks to Dennis Wawryk and Kari Gray for all the time they spent coaching the teams.
Feb. 10, students in the elementary did special activities to recognize the 100th day of school.
The SCC provided treats for the staff every day last week in recognition of Staff Appreciation Week. There were muffins, cookies and coffee every day. They were greatly appreciated.
Elementary students exchanged Valentine cards, cookies or candies Thursday for Valentine's Day. The SLC sponsored a Red and Pink Day and cans of Crush pop (Crush-o-Grams) were delivered to many of the students.
Friday, the annual Winter Olympics were held at the school. SLC members do a lot of pre-planning for the day, but also arrive early at the school to prepare the events for the day. These events include human curling, flags, floor hockey, broomball and the best friends' game.
The students were divided into four teams — Manitoba, British Columbia, Yukon Territory and Newfoundland-Labrador. Each team had high school captains, staff members and students from kindergarten to Grade 12.
The events began with opening ceremonies in the gym. Each team had to recite a chant they made that morning and then they went straight to their events.
The SCC provided a delicious lunch of taco salad in a bag for all staff and students. They were delicious and a nice treat.
In the end, the team from Newfoundland-Labrador won the Olympics with the team from Manitoba finishing second.
Feb. 24, the students from Grades 4 to 12 will go on their annual ski trip to Table Mountain. All students must take a skiing or snowboarding lesson. For many students this will be their first experience at a ski hill.
The Grades 1 to 3 students will take a field trip to Saskatoon on the same day. They will visit the Western Development Museum and the Can-Am Gymnastic Centre for some exercise.
Classes resume Monday, Feb. 22.
