We knew that beautiful fall weather wouldn't last forever but it doesn't make missing it any easier. Halloween is just around the corner and we know how much fun it can be for the kids when the weather co-operates. We also know what a deterrent bad weather is for them too. Let's hope for seasonal weather with trick-or-treaters making safe rounds in their neighbourhoods for this annual tradition.
Unity Credit Union celebrated their 70th anniversary in style. Earlier this year they hosted a highly successful children's carnival in their parking lot in May. They also hosted a community barbecue in Tramping Lake at the branch there. In September they cooked and served a pancake breakfast at UCHS. They topped off their celebrations with a gala evening Oct. 20. Guests were treated royally by the staff as each staff member served their assigned tables for the evening.
Following a four course meal, General Manager Gerald Hauta entertained those in attendance not only with his humour and enthusiasm but also his reflections on historic events and prices from the past 70 years. In a short program, Board President Murray Haughian talked about the big decision to install an ATM machine in 1982, when he first was elected to the board. Although the decision at that time appeared to be taking away from the personal member service, it really was a move forward in providing one of the many things members would appreciate and shows that Unity Credit Union focused on member needs continually.
The CEO of Credit Union Central of Saskatchewan, Ken Anderson, commented on how he noticed, during the slide presentation, staff working outside the branch in their community doing individual volunteer work or as a staff group. The program was followed by fantastic entertainment duo Double Vision who had the audience captured with their magic and humour. It truly was a grand way to celebrate this platinum anniversary.
You know those annoying phone calls claiming your computer is experiencing problems and you need to log on somewhere to correct it? You know it's a scam; you have read about or heard about this for months. According to SaskTel, they are still getting numerous complaints about it and their best advice is to call 1-888-489-4779 or log on to www.crtc.gc.ca and make sure you are on the do not call list. Just think, why would any legitimate company or organization need to disguise their phone number? If call display shows any strange number or unknown caller, be aware.
Warrior football went past the regular season for the first time since 2009. The Warriors played a first round playoff game Oct. 22 against Delisle. Unfortunately Delisle was a tough match all year for all teams, with Unity being the only team to have scored against them. The Warriors were unable to score in the playoff game and football season is now complete for the year. Thank you to the coaches and the team for providing some great, live action football for us this season.
Warriors volleyball is moving quickly to season's end. Senior boys and senior girls still have one tournament each before they begin conference playoffs the first weekend in November. Junior girls headed to one more tournament in Kindersley, then hosted conference playoffs Oct. 26 and regional playoffs will also be hosted in Unity, Nov. 3. Junior boys placed third in their latest tournament and headed to Macklin for conference playoffs Oct. 26. The junior B girls were in Luseland for a tournament last weekend and host their home tournament Oct. 29.
Minor Hockey is proud to be icing two initiation teams, two novice teams, two atom teams, one pee wee team, one bantam team and a midget AA program. This will keep the rink very busy this winter. Minor Hockey hosts the annual Sylvan Lake hockey camp this weekend.
Congratulations to Ash "Crash" Cooper who was invited to be part of the rodeo clown group at National Finals Rodeo this year.
The fall supper circuit has begun with Unity United Church and St. Michael's Parish in Tramping Lake holding their events last weekend. St. Peter's Parish will hold their annual fall supper Nov. 6.
The Unity Facilities Committee will be the beneficiary of this year's 14th annual Dance for the Health of It, taking place Saturday from 3 p.m. - 11 p.m. with Dusty Rose providing the music. To date this group has contributed over $50,000 to their community.
Unity's Little Theatre is set to hold their production Acting Funny next weekend, Nov. 4 and 5. There are still some tickets available for this dinner theatre event so get yours before the deadline.
Donor's Choice changed their collection ways this year. There will no longer be door-to-door canvassing in either town or rural areas. If you were unable to drop off your donations Oct. 24 and 25, you can still bring it into Sears and a receipt will be issued to you by mail.
Don't forget to mark Nov. 13 on your calendars as Unity United Church hosts former premier, Lorne Calvert, as guest preacher at their service that morning. He has been here twice before and both times has presided over a very enjoyable, humour filled, relatable message. You won't want to miss this opportunity.
Mark your calendars for Nov. 26 as the annual Ladies Night Out will take place upstairs in the community centre. There are 22 vendors this year and the event will run from 6 -10 p.m. There is a $4 admission fee, of which a portion will be donated to the Cam Cooper's children's trust fund.
Coffee row folk are becoming a little more co-operative on the latest topics of their discussion. Of course the tables are utilizing their freedom of speech rights as they discuss both the civic by-election for two council seats as well as the upcoming provincial election. And this time of year, the topic of weather can never be left off the table of discussion. And so again you can see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row.
