Cruise the town for bargains this weekend

Unity News

Thank you to everyone who participated in last weekend’s Unity Western Days, and to the organizers who work for a whole year leading up to this annual event to ensure there is something for everyone to take part in. The committee would like to extend thanks to Allen and Trudy Farwell for a tractor donation to agricultural society and rodeo.

Hello and thank you to readers of this column from afar. I appreciate the continued kind words of Keith and Claire from Maidstone who always pass on their appreciation of this Unity news. As well, I received a nice card from Bruce and Irene in Battleford. And, I often hear from my dad of accolades from Jim and Janice of North Battleford as well. It’s motivation to keep on doing what I’m doing.

This weekend there is the community wide garage sale. Last week’s Press Heraldcontained a complete list of locations hosting and you can pick up maps from UMP or the town office.

The Town posted the watering schedule on their Facebook page. Water is a precious resource. Did you know Unity’s water consumption during summer months is three times greater than the national average? Residents are asked to do their part in adhering to the watering schedule to help ensure a continuous source of water. The current watering schedule permits watering on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with no watering on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Residents are also reminded to do their watering in early mornings or evenings to prevent water loss through evaporation.

Did you know that in order to use a fire pit in your yard, you should have a fire pit permit? The Town of Unity has these permits available free of charge. Your fire pit should be approved and inspected.

Clean, plastic shopping bags are being collected at Unity Sarcan depot. A community member has found a way to make use of them now that they are no longer accepted in the single-stream recycling program. Residents are urged to continue to use reusable shopping bags whenever possible.

Residents are also reminded to check out the Unity Community Resource Centre Facebook page and the SARCAN website for places to recycle clothing, some household items, electronics, household paint and other items.  UCRC also reminds residents that housewares  in sealed boxes set by their shed will be passed on to Community Living. All donations should be in good shape and working order.

The Summer Fun Centre is ready to roll starting July 3, with head leader Jessica Weber, newly conferred with a Bachelor of Education degree, at the helm.

The pool is now open and the parks and recreation director reports winterizing went well. Nothing was broken, the pool was filled on time and chemicals are balanced, making for good news for pool users after last year’s delays. Danielle Irons is once again serving as head lifeguard with eight other Unity teens and one from Edam assisting her.

Next weekend the Girls’ Prairie League Softball comes to town bringing about 28 teams in all divisions of softball to play off for their league finals.

Unity Public School track and field meet was rained out and is rescheduled to June 14.

June 12, St. Peter’s School will be holding their AR reading celebration. This year St. Peter’s will bid farewell to Conrad Baum who has spent the last 32 years teaching in Grades 7, 6 and 4, as well as numerous grades for physical education. He will be remembered for his love of Louis Riel, Elvis Presley, Terry Fox and Batoche, as well as flip flops and short. Mr. Baum took his Grade 4 classes on field trips to Batoche every year for the past 15 years. The students will also remember their many trips to Heritage Manor, as Mr. Baum took them to visit the residents, to entertain with song and play games together. Mr. Baum has also left a lasting legacy in the annual cross-country meet held at the golf course for the past 30 years. He was instrumental in getting this started and running it for all these years. He coached cross-country, soccer, volleyball and basketball. He also made sure to enter his class in the annual Unity Music Festival for choir selections, as well as choral speaking.

At UCHS, Mrs. Mamer and Mr. Orobko are retiring at the end of the school year.

Coffee row folks are happily talking about some rain at last, although the conversation has delved into what kind of weather we might expect this summer with confirmation of tornadoes in other parts of Saskatchewan already in place. Local ball teams and national sports teams also seem to make their way forward in the conversation. So you can see life is full of fun and activity in Unity with our friends at coffee row sharing this traditional part of our community culture. Until next time …
