Cooking up Norwegian foods

Meota News

Friday, Dec. 4, at the Do Drop In, seven energetic ladies spent the afternoon baking Norwegian goodies for the Sons of Norway Christmas Party to be held Sunday.

We made obleskiver, (a small pancake ball), heart waffles, potato sausage and, with some trepidation, a kransekake. This is the celebration cake, often used as a wedding cake, and is made up of 18 or more rings. Icing joins the rings as it is set into a cone shape then decorated with flags and small ornaments. It is hollow inside.

We had quite a struggle rolling out the perfect rings and our first cake didn't pass the test, but the second one turned out very nice. We broke up the first one to eat at the party. It was a learning experience for us all and an enjoyable afternoon. (Information provided by Arlene Walker )

Sunday, folks gathered at the Do Drop In and enjoyed a social afternoon of games — crochinole, Norwegian whist, canasta, tile rummy and cribbage. This was followed by a delicious supper featuring lutefisk, pickled herring, potato sausages and many Norwegian dishes. By then, there were about 40 people present.

Draws were made to decide who would do dishes and some door prizes were given out. The 50/50 draw was made.

Everyone left with a happy, full feeling of having had a great day.
