Waseca News

It always seems to me that March can be a month of stormy weather at times. The geese must think spring is here because they are back. Hope they can find some water to swim in. Although we have had some very mild days, the ground in many places is still covered with snow.

Gophers, too, are making their appearance. They usually come out very early.

Many people have been ill with various forms of flu.

Travelling is still very popular even though we are getting close to spring and the work it brings.

Jug and Eleanor Pegg recently returned from a holiday spent in Cuba, where they enjoyed the sights and fine weather. Eleanor then travelled to Calgary with her daughter Katlyn and husband Corry Ducherer to visit daughter Dallas and her husband Jay.

Evelyn Janus returned recently from Drayton Valley, Alta., where she visited with her sister Ethel Geisbrecht and Ethel's daughter Rhona and her husband.

It is just recently that I was sent an article from a December issue of the Saskatoon Star Phoenix. The article was entitled Maidstone's Birdhouse Man, Bruce McFadyen, has become a hero to two Saskatoon charities. Bruce and his wife Mary raised their family in Waseca and still live on the east side of Waseca. For years Bruce has been making birdhouses which are auctioned and sold for charities. He began making and numbering the birdhouses in 2002 and, at a recent Ronald McDonald fashion show charity, one was numbered 15,000. Bruce has used the birdhouse project for many causes, with none of the money raised going to administration. His motivation for good work has reached far and wide. Many of his birdhouses can be seen throughout the countryside, providing shelters to protect songbird populations. Congratulations, Bruce. We are proud of you!
