Congratulations to Amy and Ben Lenko on the birth of a baby boy. Luke was born April 23 in Lloydminster hospital. Luke is the newest resident in the village.
Our deepest condolences to Rose James and her daughter, on the death of a husband and father, Kevin James. Kevin passed away suddenly at the young age of 57 years. His ready smile, friendly personality and willingness to be of help to all will always be remembered by his relatives and many friends.
The joint annual meeting of Waseca Hall and Waseca Recreation Board was held in the Waseca Hall April 27th beginning with a supper at 5 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. by Kathy Campbell, who reviewed the purpose of the joint meeting. Rhonda Benkendorf, secretary, read the minutes of the April 2013 joint meeting, which were approved.
Some discussion followed on how to advertise this meeting. Crystal Sutherland volunteered to organize a community calendar on Facebook: Discussions on whether to keep the hall phone since phone rates are increasing, on location of the recycle bins which are now situated north of the hall, funding board grant and furnace issues were held. There were no volunteers for the two vacant positions on the hall board.
Rodney Weisner chaired the recreation board meeting. He gave a comprehensive report on the activities of the board including a review of 2013 and current and future activities which included the results of the recent fish fry and plans for the June 15 Father's Day brunch and raffle, July 1 float for Maidstone parade and Sept. 27 cultural day.
Sandra Sutherland, presented the financial operating report for the recreation board which showed a successful year.
Reports were then heard from the Waseca Community Centre, which showed an increase of activity and a favourable financial report. The Waseca Rink is also doing well. The playground committee reported on their many successful fundraising activities and the preparation of the site for a new playground with wave slide, microgravity spinner, math panel, vertical ladder, fireman pole, drum panel, intergalactic stepping pods, maze play panel and net climber, all to be installed by July 30. Things are going well with the Heritage Church. Waseca firemen are busy in conjunction with the Maidstone firemen as reported by Curtis Sutherland. Communities in Bloom will disband and Waseca village continuing to do its part in the community. Sandra Sutherland and Shirley James presented the Waseca, Memorial Hall financial report, which showed a successful year, but bookings were down.
The village cleanup went ahead on April 26 despite the rainy weather and the cemetery cleanup is scheduled for 10 a.m. May 3.
The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.
A trip to Europe in the Easter break was enjoyed by students from Maidstone High School. They visited a number of cities including Paris. Two Waseca students were included in the group.
