It was another cold week, but we survived and look with amazement at weather in other parts of the world. We are happy to be where we are.
Four tables of Canasta had a pleasant evening on Jan. 31. High scorers were Arlene Walker and Robert Iverson, then John Soloninko and his partner Cora Christiansen, followed by Beulah Corbeil and Barbara Soloninko. It was great fun and a bountiful lunch and coffee were enjoyed by all. Canasta will not be played Feb. 14, the next regular date, because of the Valentine dance being held at the Meota Community Complex, that evening. Canasta will be held again Feb.28, at 7 p.m.
Ken and Anna Tucker enjoyed a drive in the country last Saturday and stopped for a game of Kaiser with Beulah Corbeil. It is good they are both up and about after so many health problems this winter.
I came across an old Lawrence Welk show recently and had to smile when I saw the men in the chorus and orchestra were all dressed in yellow suits. I don't think you'll ever see that again. I thought it was bad enough when I've seen them in pale blue suits.
Not only vacuum cleaners have the retractable cord, now the toaster has one. What a good idea.

News from down under: the girls flew from Brisbane to Aukland and were warmly welcomed by relatives there who entertained them for several days before they drove on to Cambridge to another family. A few days there and they're off toChristchurch where they will rent a car for five daysfor a trip to Ranfurly on the Â鶹´«Ã½AV Island, then a return flight toBrisbane Feb. 11. They leave there on Feb. 25 for home. There are no crows, kangaroos or koalas in New Zealand, but there are magpies, deer and dandelions. In Cambridge their cousin has a huge tree, ripe with lemons, a vegetable garden, a 1904 family home (being renovated), plus a beach house that the girls got to stay in. All the boulevards in town are full of flowers and every yard, too. The birds are different and all sing so beautifully. They saw a plaque that read, "To be old and wise, first you must beyoung and stupid."
The countryside of hills and lakes and dairy cows is much like home, but no one has mentioned sheep yet.
The Meota Curling Club held their ladies' bonspiel Feb.1. Only five teams entered so it was held on one day with each team playing four six-end games. It was a bit of a curling marathon, but fun was shared. The winning team was the Twila Doom team from Edam with Twila, Karen, Jamie and Chelsey. Second was Wanda Weber with her team of Joan, Gisele and Sheila. The third place team was Jacquie Code with Stacey, Bridget and Madison. A banquet followed, put on by the ladies of the curling club. Thanks to our generous sponsors from businesses in the Meota and North Battleford district and individual donors, everyone went home with a prize. We acknowledge everyone who donated prizes and their time to make the bonspiel a success. The curling club is planning a sturling bonspiel later in February and the spring spiel is scheduled for March 7, 8 and 9.
