Cold weather keeps bird feeders busy

The temperature Sunday evening was -27 C and it sounds as though there will be no let up in the cold weather for several days. During the cold weather the birds keep themselves busy and their feeders empty quickly.

During the cold weather the birds keep themselves busy and their feeders empty quickly. Chickadees are the most numerous birds this winter. Some bird watchers have downy woodpeckers and some tree sparrows visiting as well as the odd white-breasted sparrows, a nut-hatch and only a few redpolls, which usually are around in larger numbers.

Sunday morning I was pleased to see a great horned owl sitting in a tree just across the driveway from my kitchen window. It stayed there all morning. The great horned owl is a beautifully marked bird, mostly grey feathers with a white color. Of course its most prominent feature is its tufted ears.

In my Jan. 30 column I made an error. I reported a death that should have read Dorothy Tennant (Longdo) not June Tennant. June's death occurred earlier.

Robert and Linda Huard and some of their family returned last week from a holiday spent in Mexico. I understand the figure skating carnival held in Maidstone last weekend was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Mikaylah Blyth who has been enrolled in figure skating lessons this winter and took part in the carnival.

Jan. 25 and 26 saw Christine Pike and her sister, Maureen Bexson of Strome, Alta. attending the Camrose Bull Congress. There they hosted an honorary display in honour of the Lamont Lindsay families who were foremost in the development of the Speckle Park breed of cattle. Brochures were available telling of how the breed came to be. Also available, especially for the children, were colouring books and jigsaw puzzles.
