Happy New Year! Happy birthday today to our 18-year-old girl, Shelby - time has flown. We will treasure every moment as this is her graduation year.

Residents can have their Christmas trees picked up from the street following regular residential pick up on Tuesday, Jan. 15. To ensure pick up, please place your tree at the curb with your garbage.

After a 12-day break, including weekends, kids are back in class. And for UCHS, this means the final leg of semester one before exams begin. And for the grads of 2013, this means one final semester left in their Grade 12 year. Sigh, where does that time go?

KC Rescue was pleased with the donations of baking as well as the supporters of their Dec. 20 bake sale. The event earned them more than $800. These funds help keep stray cats from overpopulating the town's streets. Cats that are rescued are treated for any conditions, given all their shots and spayed or neutered before they are put up for adoption.

Hockey is back in full action. January marks the last leg of regular season for most teams before they begin league and/or provincial playoffs starting in February. Check out the rink schedule either posted at the arena or on the town website.

Jan. 4 to 6 the curling rink hosts the senior men's and women's cash spiel with 100 per cent cash payout. Teams in attendance will include Eugene Hritziuk and Brad Heidt.

For the curling rink, the new year brings plenty of event action to the rink as a variety of bonspiels are held regularly as part of competitions leading up to provincial events as well as the annual men's, ladies and oilmen's spiels. Senior men's regionals will take place Feb. 1 to 3.

The Chamber of Commerce was proud to present the "Bundle of Bucks" winner, Dennis Mahaney of Unity, with $700 in gift certificates from participating businesses.

There will be a come and go tea for Dr. Danel Ungerer who, along with her husband Robert, have welcomed twin boys Joshua and Christian. Come out from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday to the New Horizons Hall to welcome these new babes and congratulate their parents.

Sarcan is closed between Christmas and New Year's. Save up those recyclables for the bottle drive for the grad class of 2013, who will be canvassing door to door Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Please have your recyclables ready for them and they thank you in advance for your support.

We were saddened in town to see another long-time business closing its doors. Ultra Sports is now holding a closing out sale after 21 years in the business. This was a huge boost to residents for a local retailer to offer sporting supplies, shoes and clothing. We wish Larrie and Corinne Thalheimer the best with their future plans.

The Lions are now selling tickets for their Valentine's events featuring the Hot Tamales. Watch for posters and more details on this event.

Coffee row folks are back on track for regular round table meetings. Participants enjoy a coffee and shared conversation as they mull over the many stories both locally, provincially and nationally. Right now there is much review on how Christmas and New Year's events were in their households. Local hockey action as well as local curling events are sure to be discussion topics as well. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week
