Celebrate Archives Week

Celebrating the important role of archives and archivists in preserving the history of our province, Saskatchewan will be celebrating the sixth annual Archives Week, Feb. 6 to 11.

Celebrating the important role of archives and archivists in preserving the history of our province, Saskatchewan will be celebrating the sixth annual Archives Week, Feb. 6 to 11.

Events throughout the province include, concerts, open houses and exhibits.

The City of North Battleford Historic Archives will be hosting a PowerPoint presentation at Territorial Mall Feb. 10 and 12, between 1 and 5 p.m. and at Frontier Mall Feb. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m.

The presentation will include photographs and maps of the city throughout the years, telephone directories, yearbooks, income tax rates from 1940 and even a 1910 sewer and water works document.

Harvey Cashmore, one of the volunteers at the Archives, said volunteers have been working on the presentation since December.

"It was interesting trying to get all the information," he said.

This is the fourth year the CNBHA has hosted the presentations, and new information has been added every time.

Besides being a great way to present interesting snippets of North Battleford's past to the public, it is also a good way to enhance the archives.

"Every time we host one of these things, we end up getting new material," said Cashmore, adding the CNBHA displays lists of items they are looking for.

Also, Cashmore said people can be helpful in providing extra information. For example, a photo may be dated as "circa 1920," but someone may know the exact year based on details in the photograph, such as construction.

"Sometimes it's quite amazing what we can find out," said Cashmore.

The archives are also useful for finding information about ancestors or relatives, adds Cashmore.

At the showings, books will be available to those wishing to have a closer look at the photographs in the presentation, and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions.
