Borden Parks and Recreation Board held a casino night in the Borden Community Centre Feb. 5 with close to 80 in attendance.
An entry fee purchased $20,000 in play money. Patrons then tried their luck at the three wheels of fortune, Texas Hold'em or 21. At midnight play money was traded for tickets and a chance on four great prizes. Winning the prizes were Cathy Young, Lorraine Olinyk and Lindsay Walker, who won twice.
The recreation board had appetizers for sale throughout the evening and ran the bar, with Matt Fairbrother the roving pit boss manager.
It was a fun night with the proceeds going to help build the park at the sports ground.
Action Bowl at Borden is in to its fourth week of Winter League bowling and a few more players have started playing. There are six teams in the 55+ league playing Monday and Wednesday afternoon and Tuesday morning and five teams playing in the Mixed League Monday and Wednesday evenings, with one slot still available on Monday night for five players.
Vern and Dianne Sylvester are going to keep running the alley. The banquet and awards night is set for Friday, March 25.
Some results after three weeks are: in 55+ high singles, doubles and averages - Jean Sawchyn 195, 531 and 163; Bernice Buell 183, 447, 144; Edna Carnahan with 156 single and 145 average and Darlene Penner with a 485 triple; Bill Meakin 216, 510 and 173; Clive Wensley with 212, 506 and 169; Vern Sylvester - 202, 534, and 178. In the Mixed League Ian Tracksell with 282, 700 and 221 ave.; Ivan Youchezin with 193, 468 and 168; Donovan Hebig 154, 370 and Clayton Clark 114 average; Mandy Tracksell 475 triple and 165 average.; Lorraine Olinyk - 188, 506, and 146, Kandis Branderick a 216 single; Annette Nesbitt 432 triple and 128 average.
Since some teams do not have five players. It is hard to place teams and some bowlers just got started last week. Bowlers range in age from Donovan Hebig in elementary school to Clayton Clark who is over 90.
Both Borden School junior girls' and boys basketball teams lost out in the playoffs this past week and the senior teams are in upcoming tournaments.
There are three curling teams - junior boys, junior mixed and senior girls. Their playoffs are Feb. 15-16 in Waldheim for juniors. The senior girls are in Hanley Feb. 18 and 19.
Teacher appreciation week is Feb. 13 to 19 and winter break is Feb. 20 to 26. Family in motion Day is Feb. 21 when everyone is encouraged to do physical activity with their families.
There will be a Scholastic Book Fair Feb. 11 and a cyber bullying workshop with Brian Trainor Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 was the 100th day of school and in Kindergarten to Grade 2 students dressed up as 100-year-olds and brought a collection of 100 items to share.
Valentine's Day parties will be held in Kindergarten to Grade 6 Feb. 14. Grades 3 to 12 skied at Table Mountain Feb. 9 and the wildlife management class will be ice fishing on Feb. 15.
Borden United Church held their annual meeting following a potluck lunch Feb. 6 at the church. Going back on the board for three-year terms are Helen Sutherland, Jean Graham and Lorraine Olinyk. Other members are Ed Neufeld, Curtis Crabb and Jean Hryniuk who is chairperson. Lorraine is secretary-treasurer.
Minister for Borden and Speers United Churches is Gayle Wensley, DLM, who is able to perform baptisms, Holy Communion and funerals.
Change for Change rolling of coins will be Feb. 27 and it was decided to send the funds to help at Maple Creek after their flood disaster in 2010.
The board is to look into possible options and costs where services could be held after it is no longer feasible to hold them in the church due to disintegrating basement walls.
Gayle would like the church members to knit or crochet prayer shawls and at the end of the year donate them to a worthy cause. Those who do not knit or crochet can purchase the wool and get someone to do it for them.
Upcoming events: World Day of Prayer on March 4 in the seniors' room at 2 p.m. with Gayle Wensley as guest speaker; Shrove Tuesday pancake supper with the Anglicans on March 8 in the community centre at 5:30 p.m., admission by goodwill donation; St. Patrick's Day lunch in the seniors' room March 17 at 11 a.m.; joint Good Friday service at the Anglican Church April 22. The church also holds a service every month at 3 p.m. in the Borden Care Home with ladies bringing in lunch.
