The Borden Care Home Inc. held their annual meeting June 7 in the basement of the care home with the board and four community members present. Re-elected to the board were chair Craig Hamilton, vice-chair Terry Tkazyck, secretary Mary Hunchak, treasurer and manager Heather Pidwerbesky, members Richard Mireau, Doug Boyes, Kirk Maxwell and Joe Kasahoff.
The addition to the care home is about four weeks behind schedule due to having to install some additional fire alarms and will open in early fall. The present care home opened May 1, 2001 and at the opening for the addition there will be recognition of donors.
Income for 2010 was reported: operations - $676,927, accommodations - $207,337, donations - $459,795, Peterson trust - $8,300 and interest of $1,495. Expenses were $235,788 for staff, supplies, repairs, utilities, insurance and others, leaving a surplus of $441,139. The balance at start of 2010 was $355,843 with income of $441,139 for a year end balance of $796,982.
Radisson Royal Purple held a barbecue at the home of Roberta Harris June 6 with seven members present. At the meeting after supper, it was decided members would have an ice cream booth at the Radisson Fair Aug. 6 and 7. Three ladies are travelling to Allan Lodge June 15 for supper and a fun night, The lodge had sold 27 Charity Appeal ticket books for a total of $808 raised for the Saskatchewan Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children and Saskatchewan Elks Foundation. Reports were heard from the secretary L. Olinyk and treasurer Tina Hessell on their semi annual work and from the Sunshine Committee of Kay Shipowich and L. Olinyk. Surveys have been ongoing for three months on the future of OORP until 2014. At the national convention in July in Newfoundland they hope to come up with some solutions for declining membership all across Canada and ideas to revitalize the organization.
June 7, the Borden Co-op and Affinity Credit Union, Borden branch held a free appreciation barbecue. Many came from the school to have their free lunch. Winning door prizes from the co-op were Curtis Crabb, Phil Hogg, Rachel Block and Debbie Bathgate for adults. Student winners wereEmma Joan Hebig, Brooke Brazeau, Cassandra Lumgair. Winning credit union prizes were McKinley Martens, Wyatt Piprell, Madison Sutherland. Student winners were Dani Joynt/Skillingstad, Lindsay Westad and Harvey Verishine.
Borden and Speers United Churches held a joint service and picnic at Speers the morning of June 12. Gayle Wensley officiated at the outdoor service, which was a combination Pentecost and camping service with some lively hymns for the children. A bountiful potluck lunch was enjoyed by all attending. The two churches will be closed for July and August with services resuming Sept. 3.
June 12 was Borden Golf Club's annual tournament. This year it was a two- person scramble that didn't get quite finished due to a downpour of rain in the afternoon. Winning the trophies were Marg Hunchak for senior ladies, Vern Sylvester for senior men, Glenn Sutherland for the men and Cole Sutherland and Connor Wainwright the students. Everyone earned a prize but first and second for each flight were: championship - Vern and Glenn Sutherland, Scott Sutherland and Graham Derbowka; first flight men -Austin Harpham and Brock Joncas, Roy Saunders and Ian Wainwright; second flight - Dave Buckingham and Tom Burnett, Jordan Hauk and Chuck McCutcheon; ladies' first flight - Reily Pool and Sheri McCutcheon, Dianne Sylvester and Marg Hunchak; students' flight - Cole and Connor, Brandon Shukin.
Long putt went to Ed Neufeld, Dianne Sylvester and Brandon Shukin, longest drive to Jordan Hauk, Reily Pool and Connor W, closest to pin to Reily and Sheri, Don Block for men and Brandon for students.
The Borden Community Centre ladies served lunch.
Saturday, Aug. 27, the BCC Preservation Committee will be holding a four-person scramble golf tournament.
