Buckle up for the difficult month of March

After a cold beginning to the week, we are now enjoying sunny, mild weather with little wind. The evenings are beautiful with a moon that is near full. At the end of the week we will be a few days into March.

After a cold beginning to the week, we are now enjoying sunny, mild weather with little wind. The evenings are beautiful with a moon that is near full.

At the end of the week we will be a few days into March. There is the old saying that, "March winds are loud and shrill. They wake the sleeping daffodil." I doubt that daffodils will be awakened, but in my experience March can be a difficult month.

The end of last week brought us the news of the death of Edna Whitehead.

Edna, as we all knew her, was the third child born to Frederick and Margaret Constantine, who had immigrated to Canada from their home in County Durham, England in 1908. They settled in the Bear Island district and it was there that Edna grew up sharing all the rigours of pioneer life. For a few years the family lived in Forest Bank district, 1918 to 1922. Edna, of course, attended Forest Bank School. When Bear Island School was built, the family returned to their original home and Edna was able to take the remainder of her schooling in Bear Island School. After finishing school, Edna worked hard on the family farm helping make ends meet.

On Aug. 28, 1948, Edna married Harry Whitehead, a farmer in the district. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Elizabeth and Beverley.

Following her husband's death, in 1977, Edna remained on the farm for several years. She spent some time in the Tighnduin Apartments in Lashburn and for the last four years she has lived in Jubilee Home in Lloydminster.

Edna was in her 100th year at the time of her death. She lived a remarkable life of hard work, community involvement, devotion to family and a love of travel and participation in enjoyable activities.

Many of us have fond memories of Edna. Sympathy is extended to Elizabeth and Beverley, their families and to other relatives.

Funeral service for Edna was held in All Saints Anglican Church, Lashburn on Thursday.

Congratulations to Jill Shumay rink out of Maidstone, who along with teammates Kara Johnston, Taryn Holtby and Jinaya Ayrey, made a good showing at the Tournament of Hearts held in Kingston, Ont. during the past week. We hope to see them there again next February.

They were well supported by parents, relatives and friends who travelled to Kingston for the tournament.
