Borden Co-op celebrated their 100th birthday with a festival in the Borden Community Centre June 19. The centre was decorated with strings of red and white banners hanging from the ceiling, red metallic ribbon with "100" attached, hanging in the middle and bouquets of balloons, along with a bouquet of flowers from Federated Co-op.
Guest speakers congratulating the co-op on their 100 years were MLA Randy Weekes and Mayor Dave Buckingham. President of the board Luke Walker welcomed everyone and gave a brief history of the co-op, from its beginning in 1914.
Entertaining were three ladies from the Sask Fiddlers Association, Kenny the clown did magic tricks and made animal balloons for the kids, Tyler Golding showed some of his magic card tricks, face painting and balloons for the kids.
There were plenty of food and games of chance for the kids and adults to play. You bought five coupons for a dollar and you paid no more than two coupons for any food or games- corn dogs, souvlaki, popcorn, snow cones, tacos with cheese sauce, licorice, huge suckers, candy floss, lemonade and assorted candies. Everyone could enjoy birthday cake for free. Games included basketball toss and numbered ducks swimming in water and you could win prizes at the games.
A very good crowd attended as the hall was pretty full from 5 to 7 p.m. If the weather had co-operated, the event was to have been held out on the street. During the day, you could buy a loaf of bread at the co-op grocery for five cents.

A wall in the Borden School gym was decorated with birds, butterflies and busy bees around a tree with flowers at the base for the kindergarten grad June 18. One wall had a poster gallery with work each student had done during the year, for them to take home afterwards.
The kindergarten and Grade 1 classes sang My, Oh My,What a Beautiful Day, then their teacher Jacqueline Corbett thanked everyone for coming, as well as those who had helped in her room, especially Carol Crabb. She read where each grad would go if they had the chance, what they wanted to be when they grew up and their favourite thing about kindergarten.
As each student was named, they came up and received a certificate and a rose to give to their parents. A slideshow was presented, with the background music Because I'm Happy, depicting the work the students enjoyed throughout their year at school.
