Correction: in the photos last week of the baptism at Borden, the name Lorraine was placed in front of Huxley, which is incorrect – it should be just Huxley.
The Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee held a chili supper on April 13, with very poor attendance from the community. The committee is raising money to buy new chairs and long tables for the centre. The 50/50 draw of $770 was won by Debbie Dubyk of Hafford, so thanks to all those who bought 50/50 tickets.
The Borden Fire and Rescue held a barbecue and open house at their new fire hall on April 10, with very good attendance. Everyone enjoyed hamburgers or hot dogs along with pop, water and fudgsicles, paid by donation. Terry Tkazyck, the former fire chief who suffered a stroke last fall and is now residing in Stensrud Lodge in Saskatoon, was on hand with his family and the Fire and Rescue members from Borden, Radisson, Langham and Maymont pooled their personal funds from meetings and donated it to Terry. Thank you to all of those firefighters/first responders who donated to this cause.
The Borden Friendship Club held their regular meeting followed by their annual meeting on April 10. Florence Neufeld gave the treasurers report for the year and Sandra Long of the nominating committee bought in the slate of officers for the ensuing year. Elected were President Eileen Petrun, Vice-President Bev Assman, Treasurer Florence Neufeld and Secretary Lorraine Olinyk. Sandra also gave the names of those on the various committees – lunch, sending cards, bingo, entertainment, decorating and Beautiful Borden flower barrels with most staying the same with the addition of Dianne Winters to lunch. The fees remain the same at $15 for the year and are due as of April 10. Bev Assman gave a report of what the club had done in the past year – bingos, teas, concerts –and Eileen Petrun thanked all the executive and committee members for all their hard work during the year and asked them to give themselves a pat on the back. Winning at Kaiser April 9 was Jillian Orchard, Ed and Florence Neufeld and next Kaiser is April 23. The club is going on a bus tour May 25 – pick up at Borden 8:30 a.m., in to Saskatoon to pick up members and then to Hague Museum, Wanuskewin and the Ukrainian Museum, ending up at Smiley’s in Saskatoon for supper. The committee of Florence Neufeld, Martha Rempel or Eleanor Walton need to be notified by May 1 if going and to pay by May 15.
The monthly Jam Session was held April 11 in the Borden Friendship Centre with over 40 in attendance to hear the various groups perform. First up was the Ukrainian Connection with Walter Kyliuk playing fiddle and accordion, Ron Tkachuk on accordion, Darlene Hupaleo playing guitar, Russ Fountain playing guitar, Doug Martin on drums and Darlene and Russ providing the vocals. The next group was Ed Neufeld on guitar, Ron Mills on guitar and vocals, Roy Saunders and Avery Fairbrother playing guitars, then Roy and Avery sang along with Ron for some songs. Carrrie Harkness, playing guitar, sang some songs she had written and she was accompanied by Ed Neufeld and Doug Martin. Joan and Glenn Julseth, who moved to Loreburn, were on hand to play and sing a few songs, with Russ and Glenn on guitars and Doug on the drums. Jamie Brandrick and Avery, playing guitars, sang a few numbers accompanied by Ron Mills on drums and Ross McBain on guitar. After this group, Ed Neufeld had a turn at entertaining with his singing accompanied by Russ, Gerald, Roy and Ron then Gerald Wiebe played guitar and sang a number of songs and was accompanied by Ross, Roy, Avery and Ron. Quite a few got up to dance during the evening. Lunch, coffee and juice was served throughout the evening and the door prize of an Easter bunny was won by Gerald Wiebe. Condolences are extended to Jack Amson and his family on the loss of Myrtle who passed away April 4 at the age of 81. Her service was held in the Radisson Curling Rink on April 13 with Minister Annette Beach, a special message from Ron Bestvater and memories from children Dave and Rocky Amson and Marsha Bzdel. After burial at Radisson Cemetery, the Radisson Curling Rink members provided lunch. Myrtle is survived by her husband Jack, eight children, 20 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, her sister Norma Amson of Radisson, her other siblings, sisters-in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
