The Borden Museum invites children of any age to come out and play games that children used to play - such as checkers, snakes and ladders, crokinole, etc. On the first day, July 3, close to 20 children showed up to play games from yesteryear, with most of them staying the two hours. This is on for the summer months, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2 - 4 p.m. under the supervision of summer student Brianne Davis, and is free of charge. Children can also come on Saturdays from 2 - 4 p.m., but need to be accompanied by an adult supervisor.
The museum is open Tuesdays - Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays, 1 - 5 p.m.; and Sundays, 2 - 4 p.m. New displays this year are 100 Years of Borden Co-op and the Clarence Williams story.
Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club were in Saskatoon for the Prairieland Junior Ag Showcase at Saskatoon Prairieland Park July 4 - 7, participating in judging, grooming and showing their heifers and steers.
In the judging competition, Abigail Roth and Anna Verbonac were in the top 10, Kolten Yasieniuk was sixth in intermediates and Rachel Sutherland placed first in the intermediate division. In team grooming, only one team placed; Cole Reid, Cody Shumanski and Morgan, from another club, were third in juniors.
In beef showmanship the morning of July 6, in juniors, Boden Letkeman, Cole Reid and Abigail Roth were picked out of their class and in intermediates Rachel was picked, all to compete in finals, but none were champion showman.
In the Best of Beef Female Show, in Angus yearlings Abigail Roth was 10th, in Maine Anjou Cole Reid was reserve champion and in red Angus Brittany Attrux was third. In Simmental, Jessica Attrux was fifth, Cody Shumanski seventh, and Morgan Attrux eighth. In the other breeds class, Ben Verbonac was fourth, Rachel Sutherland fifth and Anna Verbonac sixth.
In two-year-old commercial cow-calf, Anna Verbonac was first and Cody Shumanski was second. Anna was also third in the three-year-old cow-calf.
For their group of five heifers, Crown Hill Club was fourth, picking up $35 for the club. Prize money awarded in all the heifer/cow classes went from $50 for first place to $5 for 10th place, dropping $5 for each placing.
Quite a number of the members entered articles in other 4-H classes - Abigail Roth entered crafts, sewing and two entries in photography. Cheyanne Roth got second in crafts. Hunter Reid entered crafts and two entries in photography, getting a third for one entry. Cole Reid entered two craft classes, pencil sketch and photography. Jessica and Jamie Attrux each entered in wood-burning. Morgan and Brittany Attrux entered two photography classes and Cody Shumanski entered crafts. Teiaria Tracksell of Borden Light Horse 4-H also had two entries in photography.
Monday, the 18 members from Crown Hill 4-H BeefClub showed their steers in the weight classes at the Junior Ag Showcase 4-H Steer Sale. The steers were sold that evening. Cash prizes were awarded in the weight classes.
Results were (placing, weight of steer, selling price): Lightweight Division 21.1 - Ben Verbonac - fifth, 998 lbs, 3.10 lb; Anna Verbonac - sixth, 1,092 lbs, $2.90 lb; Hanna Remus - eighth, 1,024lbs, $2.50 lb; 21.2 class - Jamie Attrux - eighth, 1,143 lbs. $2.70 lb; 21.3 class - Rachel Sutherland - fifth, 1,198 lbs, $2.60 lb; Cole Reid - sixth, 1,187 lbs, $3.10 lb; Cheyanne Roth - seventh, 1,180 lbs, $5 lb; Medium Weight class 22.1 - Courtney Yasieniuk -fifth, 1,233 lbs, $3 lb; Abigail Roth - sixth, 1,231 lbs, $2.90 lb; Boden Letkeman - ninth, 1,223 lbs, $3 lb; class 22.2 - Cody Shumanski - sixth, 1,267 lbs, $3 lb; Jessica Attrux - seventh, 1,264 lbs, $2.20 lb; Tyler Yasieniuk - ninth, 1,248 lbs, $3.25 lb; 22.3 class - Justin Yasieniuk - eighth, 1298 lbs @ $3.10 lb; Heavyweight class 23.1 - Kolten Yasieniuk - first, 1,316 lbs, $2.80 lb; Brittany Attrux - seventh, 1,312 lbs, $2.70 lb; 23.2 class - Hunter Reid, first and reserve grand champion, 1,379 lbs, $4.50 lb. Hunter also received an award, a banner and a leather halter.
In the Group of Five Steers, Crown Hill had two groups and the one group placed fifth getting $40 and the other placed eighth, earning ribbons. The members voted for the most helpful and sportsmanship member and the plaque went to Anna Verbonac.
The Grand Champion Steer was shown by Cassidy Serhienko of Maymont, who belongs to the Saskatoon Beef Club. Her steer weighed 1,315 lbs and sold for $6 lb.
