Borden cattle claim championships at Fall Fair

Clythemane Shorthorns - Glenn, Sheri, Duncan and Rachel Sutherland of Borden - did well in the purebred shorthorn classes at the Saskatoon Fall Fair, Nov. 7 to 10.

Clythemane Shorthorns - Glenn, Sheri, Duncan and Rachel Sutherland of Borden - did well in the purebred shorthorn classes at the Saskatoon Fall Fair, Nov. 7 to 10. In the heifer calf class Duncan placed first and had the champion heifer calf; Rachel was third. In bred yearling heifer Rachel was first with the champion and Duncan was fourth. In senior female cow with calf, Rachel placed first with her champion senior cow and calf. Then in the grand champion class, Rachel had the grand champion female with her white shorthorn yearling and her cow-calf pair were reserve champion.

In the bull calf class Duncan placed first and had the champion bull calf. In the breeder's herd, the Sutherlands placed first with their entry of four animals and they also won the premier breeder and premier exhibitor classes.

Each time they won they received a jacket, getting five each embroidered with the event they won in, and also two chairs with the event embroidered thereon. In the junior classic Rachel placed second winning $45, and in junior showmanship she placed first, winning another jacket.

Crown Hill Beef 4-H Club had two entries in team grooming at the fair and the junior team of Cole Reid, Justin Yaseniuk and Rachel Sutherland placed first. The intermediate team of Crown Hill's Kolten Yaseniuk with members from Hanley's 4-H club also placed first, all winning jackets, which they were excited to receive. The club also gets $50 for each first place, splitting with Hanley for the intermediates.

In the commercial classes, from Borden Gary and Shari Nickel had seven pens with two heifer calves getting grand champion in the one pen and their other pen placing third. One of their four steer calf pens was the grand champion and the others placed third, fourth and fifth. One pen of bred heifers placed fourth and brought in $1,550 each while two prospect steer calves went for $1,300 and $1,400. Barry and Renita Saunders had four pens - two pens of open heifers that were fourth and fifth and two pens of bulls which placed third and fourth.

Radisson Royal Purple held their November supper meeting at the Borden Art & Eatery with seven members present. Plans were finalized for the Remembrance Day service and for their tea, bake sale and raffle Dec. 8. Happy Birthday was sung to Roberta Harris and Happy Anniversary to Lorraine Olinyk. The next meeting, Dec. 3, will be their Christmas potluck supper at Roberta Harris's, and a gift exchange.

The ladies all have tickets to sell on their raffle of a $75-plus grocery hamper, with second prize of a ham, third oranges and fourth chocolates. Members are bringing items for the hamper while the Lodge will buy a turkey, salad fixings and the ham, oranges and chocolates. Adults and children's door prizes will be donated by the members.

The senior girls' and boys' 1A volleyball teams played Nov. 1. The boys were at Perdue in the north region conference playdowns. Three teams advanced to regional finals Nov. 17 - Borden, Medstead and Perdue - and the winners from that go to provincials at Medstead Nov. 23-24. The girls were in Colonsay in northern regionals playing against Saskatoon CCA who finished first with Colonsay second, Medstead third, Goodsoil fourth and Borden fifth. The winners advanced to provincials Nov. 16-17 in Englefeld.

Borden School held their Remembrance Day service Nov. 6 in Borden Community Centre, with the Grade 10 class in charge. The walls were decorated with students' posters of poppies and Remembrance Day themes. Brandon Joynt/Skillingstad and Kristie Hembery were the masters of ceremonies. Wreaths were laid by RCMP Cst. Neil Gillis, veteran Murray Taylor, Mayor David Buckingham and each class.

Eric Westad read Act of Remembrance, the Last Post was played and after two minutes of silence Reveille was played. Grades 1/2 recited Little Poppy, holding pictures drawn of poppies. Grades 3 - 6 sang an action song, Waving Flag. Grades 7 and 8 recited In Flanders Fields. From the Grade 9/10 class, Brooklyn Gader and Cassandra Lumgair read a poem, Why Wear a Poppy. From the Grade 11/12 class, Austin Dielsen and Kim Young read Pass it On.

Mr. Shaun Dyck gave a short address on the Battle of Dieppe, D Day and how many died in World Wars One and Two. He stated we remember now and forever the sacrifices made for democracy and peace.

The Grade 10 class had a video showing pictures of war from the two World Wars interspersed with students answering questions such as, "What does Remembrance Day mean to you?" and "Are you curious about the future?" The video closed with modern day war photos.

Mr. Broughton thanked everyone who helped with the service and those who attended. The service closed with everyone singing God Save the Queen.

The Remembrance Day service at Radisson was hosted by the Royal Purple and there were around 80 in attendance. Pastor Bornhuse from the Lutheran Church presided and Susan Rothenburger was the pianist. Wreaths were laid by RCMP Cst. Ryan Steele, Stan Bandur for the veterans, Ellen Cousins for the mothers, Roberta Harris for the Royal Purple and Caleb Nelson for the school.

After the service Roberta Harris and Tina Hessell presented Stan Bandur with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and a congratulatory message from the Governor General's office. A lunch of open-faced buns and sweets with beverages was served by the Royal Purple. Thanks to the many who brought sweets and helped with the lunch as only five lodge members were present.
