Borden Care Home annual meeting held

Borden Care Home Inc. held their annual meeting July 17 in the basement of the care home with six board members and one visitor present. Chairman Terry Tkaczyk opened the meeting and secretary Peggy Walker read the minutes from last year.

Borden Care Home Inc. held their annual meeting July 17 in the basement of the care home with six board members and one visitor present. Chairman Terry Tkaczyk opened the meeting and secretary Peggy Walker read the minutes from last year. The financial reports were reviewed, showing revenue of $339,174 for 2012 and expenses of $327,229 for an excess of $11,945, which was better than 2011 which had a deficit of $18,881. The new wing has all been paid down.

The accountant appointed for 2013 was Cheryl Woloschuk of Saskatoon. For the election of officers, Terry was re-elected as chairperson, Doug Boyes as vice-chair, Peggy Walker as secretary and the treasurer is Heather Pidwerbesky. Also on the board are Colleen Dear of Langham, Kirk Maxwell and Craig Hamilton of Radisson.

The home is full at present, but some singles are living in the double units in the new wing and will move into singles as they become available. The board plans to put a fenced concrete pad on the east side of the new wing and landscape the area.

Coffee and doughnuts were served by Heather.

The Borden Museum is having a garden and historic tour July 28, visiting six gardens in the area, Halcyonia School, the Diefenbaker cairn site, Quaker Church and the stone house at the former Kenjockety Farms. The tour starts at 1 p.m. from the museum and rides are available for those not having transportation. The tour will continue until 5 p.m., followed by supper at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park on the sports grounds. The tour and supper cost is $20; tour only is $8 and supper only is $15. They would like bookings made by July 24 or ASAP to Helen Sutherland at 306-997-4517.

Radisson Show and Shine runs July 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Main St. in Radisson with classic cars, vintage snowmobiles and motorcycles on display and vying for the many trophies handed out. There will be music to listen to all afternoon, food booths and many raffle prizes. A great afternoon to browse the over 100 vehicles, etc., on display and, for kids, they will have the train made of barrels to offer rides on.

Gas Plus has opened in Borden, with Cam Smith of Radisson purchasing the former Golding Service Centre. Working during the week are manager Debbie Hembery and Carol Waffle of Borden and on weekends Calvin Vanderveen of Langham is on duty. The gas bar and convenience store is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the coffee gang go there for their morning coffee as they have put in tables and chairs for our convenience. Ed Golding drives out from Saskatoon during weekdays and operates out of the two service bays beside the gas bar, doing repairs, changing oil, etc.

Welcome to Beverly Assman, who has retired from her job in Edmonton and returned to Borden to live in her home where her mother Daisy lived before passing away. Bev has become involved in the community, volunteering quite often with the meals during the flooding, joining the seniors' club and helping out with whoever needs help.

Borden's population almost doubled this past weekend with two reunions going on. The families of Archie and Peggy Wainwright, with close to 100 in attendance, held a Wainwright reunion at the farm, with brunch and supper in Borden Community Centre Saturday. After a brunch at the farm Sunday, most left for homes from P.E.I. to Alberta and in between.

The second reunion was based at the home of Ed and Florence Neufeld, with about 70 expected. Much of their camping and games occurred at Borden Memorial Park sports ground.

GO! library summer activity and reading program 2013, sponsored by Sask Lotteries and TD Bank, got under way at Borden July 17, with Robynn Pidwerbesky as co-ordinator in charge of the children's summer activity program for kids aged five to 12 years. The program is held every Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at a cost of $2 a session or $10 for the six weeks. Helping Robynn will be teen helpers Graham Sargent and Nikita Pascoe. The first week they made name tags, worked on their summer passport, did crafts and went on a nature hike. Readers can also participate in the summer reading program by picking up their reading log and activity magazine at the library, then filling in their reading logs to enter a draw.

Crown Hill 4-H Beef results from the final day at the Saskatoon Junior Ag Show July 8 are as follow. In the lightweight division Class 1, Cody Shumanski was fifth. His steer weighed 1,090 pounds and he got $2.05 a pound. In Class 2, Kolten Yaseniuk was third. His steer weighed 1,123 pounds and sold for $2.20 a pound. Rachel Sutherland was seventh with her steer weighing 1,112 pounds and selling for $2.60 a pound. Hannah Remus was 11th. Her steer weighed 1,145 pounds and sold for $2.60 a pound. Abigail Roth was ninth with a steer weighing 1,162 pounds and selling for $2.05 a pound.

Anna Verbonac was in the top two. Her steer weighed 1,160 pounds and sold for $3.50 a pound. It was then resold for $3.10 a pound and went to the food bank.

In Class 3, Courtney Yaseniuk was one of two picked to go on to the champion class. His steer weighed 1,180 pounds and sold for $2.20 a pound. Kira Casavant was fourth with a steer weighing 1,184 pounds and selling for $1.60 a pound. Brittany Attrux was ninth. Her steer weighed 1,197 pounds and sold for $1.70 a pound. Clay Casavant was sixth. His steer weighed 1,186 and pounds sold for $2.40 a pound.

In the medium weight division, in class 1, Jamie Attrux was seventh with a steer weighing 1,228 pounds and selling for $1.80 a pound. In class 2, Duncan Sutherland was fifth. His steer weighed 1,245 pounds and sold for $2.60 a pound. In class 4, Tyler Yaseniuk was ninth with a steer weighing 1,311 pounds and selling for $2.40 a pound.

In the heavyweight division, class 1, Jessica Attrux placed seventh. Her steer weighed 1,333 pounds and sold for $1.75 a pound. In Class 2, Justin Yaseniuk placed ninth. His steer weighed 1,365 pounds and sold for $2.20 a pound. Cole Reid was sixth with a steer weighing 1,355 pounds and selling at $2.70 a pound.

In the steer classes the members received prize money. The top two in each class unplaced got $25, the third got $15, all the way down to 10th place which got $7. For the sale, the shrink of 3 per cent of weight was already taken off, but there would also be 4 per cent commission taken off the selling price.

In the group of five steers, Crown Hill had two groups - the red steers placed fifth and the black steers placed eighth. The club received $40 for the fifth placing.
