Al and Denise Nichol, proprietors of Borden Art and Eatery, closed the cafe as of June 30. The business, which is for sale, will be closed until further notice. Two retirement/thank you cakes were brought to the cafe June 25 for everyone to enjoy afternoon cake and coffee. Al and Denise served free coffee and ice cream to anyone dropping in the morning of July 1. They will be missed in Borden, as many of us went there for coffee every morning and ate brunch and supper there Sundays

For the next two weeks the seniors' club will serve coffee at their clubroom from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

The Model T Bar and Grille has a name change - they are now the Model T Restaurant and Lounge. It is a family restaurant and will no longer have off-sale. With the cafe closed, the Model T will be open from noon to 11 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. and will be closed Mondays. Children will be allowed unaccompanied in the restaurant and patio, but not in the lounge.

Another change in Borden is the sale of Golding's Service Centre to Gas Plus, which is self-serve and will have a convenience store, open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., with Debbie Hembery as the manager. Ed Golding, who has moved to Saskatoon, is renting the service bays and will still be driving out Monday to Friday for repairs, oil changes, etc.

Borden seniors held their last potluck supper before summer break, and June and July birthdays were recognized. Thirty-three were on hand to sing Happy Birthday to John Petrun, Florence Neufeld, Ruben Rempel, Sandy Long, Brenda Roberts , Lottie Petriew, Helen Sutherland, Delbert Enns, Rose Mandziak and Jean Sawchyn, and later Mel Kuntz with eight members having birthdays absent. The cakes were brought by Jean Graham and Jean Hryniuk. Terry Petriew told stories and jokes, Anna Elliot played the button accordion and Art Flath told jokes. The next supper will be Aug. 28. There are no business meetings during the summer.

Crown Hill 4-H Achievement Day was held June 23 at the farm of Derek and Bev Reid of Hafford, inside their Quonset. The 19 members of the club arrived early to set up and to do their questionnaires and judging competition before lunch. The classes were then held with judging being very capably done by Ryan and Sara Archdekin of Speers. The record books had been judged by Crissy Sutherland.

In Cloverbuds, Boden Letkeman, Hunter Reid and Cheyanne Roth showed their spring calves or yearlings and they all received red ribbons for their efforts. Cheyanne was first in record book, second in the test; Boden was second in record book and first in test; Hunter was third in record book and first in test.

In juniors, there were nine - Courtney and Justin Yaseniuk, Abigail Roth, Rachel Sutherland, Jessica and Jamie Attrux, Cole Reid, Hannah Remus and Cody Shumanski. For record books Rachel was first, Jamie second, Jessica third. In questionnaires Cole was first, Courtney and Rachel second, Abigail third.

In intermediates, the members were Duncan Sutherland, Brittany Attrux and Kolten Yaseniuk. In record books, first was Brittany, second Kolten and third Duncan. In questionnaires, Duncan and Brittany tied for first and Kolten was second.

Senior members were Kira and Clay Casavant, Anna Verbonac and Tyler Yaseniuk. In record books, first was Anna, second Kira and third Tyler. In the 4-H test, Kira was first, Anna second and Clay third.

In the judging of three steers, winners were: Cloverbuds, first Hunter, second Boden and third Cheyanne; juniors, first Rachel, second Hannah and third Justin; intermediates first Kolten, second Brittany and third Duncan; and in seniors, first Clay, second Tyler and third Kira.

The grooming classes were held first. In the seniors, first was Tyler, second Clay and third Anna. In Intermediates first went to Duncan, second was Kolten and third Brittany, and, in juniors, first was Rachel, second was Justin and third Abigail. Then the top three were judged and the top groomsman was Rachel.

In the heifer class Rachel was first, Duncan second and third Abigail. Since there was no two-year-old heifer or three-year-old cow with calf, Rachel was Grand Champion and Duncan Reserve Champion.

There were 16 steers so they were divided into three classes. The top two from Class 1 were Courtney and Duncan, Class 2 were Justin and Kira and, in Class 3, Cole and Clay. Then those six steers were judged and the Grand Champion steer belonged to Cole Reid, and the Reserve Champion to Courtney Yaseniuk.

Five fathers were weighed and people paid to guess the combined weight. Richard Yaseniuk, Brian Verbonac, Trent Letkeman, Lionel Casavant and Derek Reid weighed a total of 1,140 pounds and Wally Roth of Radisson had the exact weight, winning $32.

At the awards presentation, leader Richard Yaseniuk thanked the Reids for hosting on short notice as well as thanking the sponsors, judges and assistants. A tribute was given to Lionel Casavant with Anna Verbonac compiling a video presentation of Lionel's years as a 4-H member and then leader of Crown Hill Beef for 11 years. A gift was presented. Lionel thanked his assistants over the years and the member. He said this was his last year in 4-H but he was proud of the club for sticking with him over the years and it now has become stronger than ever.

Trophies were handed out to winners in the classes and the grand aggregate trophy for high overall points will be shared by Rachel Sutherland and Kolten Yaseniuk. 4-H duffle bags went to firsts in record books and fleece throws to the top judging members. Rachel received a show cane, calf halter, overalls and a bucket of supplies for her firsts. The Cloverbuds all received buckets of supplies and show canes, and each member got a black Crown Hill hooded sweatshirt with monogrammed names and a certificate.

All the members, except Cloverbuds, will be taking their animals to the Saskatoon junior activities program July 5 - 8 at Prairieland Park, with judging classes and team grooming Saturday, the heifer show Sunday and the steer show and sale Monday. At this year's 4-H show in Saskatoon, all members receive a passport and have to go through a farm safety program, handing in their stamped passport before they can receive any prize money.
